Chapter 1 The Bet
It started out to be a perfectly normal shift rookie police officer Mark (Dimly Lit) Stise he was waxing his FTO's squad car; oh I'm sorry FTO that means Field Training Officer. Officer Dimly Lit was making sure everything was just right, he was after all Eagleton Indiana's newest rookie police officer and just like any rookie he wanted to impress his bosses. Officer Dimly Lit looked like any typical rookie cop, his uniform is clean pressed and starched. He duty belt was shining black leather; he looked at any rookie street cop right out of the academy with 2 slight exceptions.
1) Dimly Lit had been a rookie cop four years now
2) He was the first 44 year old rookie cop in Eagleton Indiana's history.
Officer Dimly Lit was confident today might be the day Trooper finally released him and he would no longer be looked at as a rookie. The eager middle aged rookie turned his attention to the Trio of officers at the entrance to the police garage. There they were the big 3:
Captain Gary Bimbo ran the police department his word was law. Rumor has it that he shot anyone who even thought his last name was funny. A no nonsense cop who ran everything by the book, and if you broke regulations he hit you upside the head with it.
Lieutenant Terry Smith ran the motorcycle traffic division, with more than 15 years on the job. Rumor had it that this tough as nails motorcycle cop would ride motor in snow if Captain Bimbo allowed it. Smith was known for his light hearted personality around his men but was all business when he out on the street.
Then there was my boss the one the only Trooper Timberwolf, Eagleton's one and only talking K-9 police wolf.
"But sir the rookie's hopeless!!" Trooper Interjected he could not believe Capt. Bimbo wouldn't see reason.
"Didn't you say it was your job to turn academy rookies into street smart cops ready to protect the citizens of Eagleton?" Lt. Smith asked politely with a smile.
"Yes sir, I did but the ones they turn out normally don't have their brains on back order!!" Trooper turned to look at his rookie who was eagerly waxing his squad car.
Bimbo felt Trooper's pain but he didn't see much choice in the matter, before Stise even became a police officer he just happened to save the Mayor and his daughter from a fate worse than death because he happened to be in the right place at the right time. And when that unemployed simpleton was asked by Mayor Moneygrubber what he could do to thank him he reply was he always wanted to be a cop because he liked the color BLUE.
"Sgt Timberwolf!!" The Captain looked at his chief trainer.
"Sir!!" Trooper stood with his paws lined perfectly at attention.
"Alright you say the rookie can't be trained, so since we can't fire him maybe we can get him to quit." Bimbo said with a smile. Trooper smiled the same way he did when he sank his teeth into his first perpetrator and turned to look at officer Dimly Lit.
"It shall be arranged!" At last he had permission to do whatever he wanted, no more Dimly Lit. Trooper's tail wagged with excitement.
"You know Capt. Bimbo it would be a shame to tarnish Sgt Timberwolf's reputation, his record is perfect 100% achievement in turning raw rookies into professional police officers." Lt Smith smiled at the Captain.
"Well all due respect sir the great Sherlock Holmes couldn't teach Dimly Lit police work." Trooper sneered to the Lt. He wasn't trying to be disrespectful to the motorcycle cop; he just knew what his rookie was capable of.
"Sir didn't you say you received an email regarding my request for added motors for my division" The Lt smiled and looked at Capt Bimbo. Smith already knew about the email and he also knew who Sgt. Timberwolf wanted to get on the motorcycle squad.
"Yes 10 more motor all brand new; you should start receiving them in the next couple of weeks." Captain Bimbo recounted. Lt Smith walked up to Sgt Timberwolf and smiled.
"It's up to you Sergeant, make the rookie quit and tarnish your spotless record" The Lt patted him on the side of his body.
"It will be my pleasure sir!" Trooper eyes narrowed
"Or trained him to become and good and capable police officer and I'll grant your request for transfer to my motorcycle division. " Lt Smith smiled, Trooper jaw almost hit the ground he had wanted to join up with the motorcycle squad ever since he heard there motto Motorcycle cops even scare regular cops.
"Sir are you serious?" Trooper stared at his dimly lit rookie he was the only obstacle standing in his way to getting what he wanted. But this idiot had been a hopeless cause for the pasted 4 years.
"You need more incentive, alright day shift and I'll even stencil you name on the bike myself. " The Lt whispered into the wolf's pointed ears.
Trooper's eyes sparkled; it was as if Lt Smith had thrown down a 25 lb T-bone steak!!
**** Trooper saw himself parking his motorcycle; there he stood on 2 legs his black motorcycle boots shined in the sunlight. His breeches were specially designed so his tail could stick out the back end. His black signature Ray Bans that he always wore rested on his snout. The sunglasses always made him look more intimidating, and his police motorcycle helmet had Eagleton's police crest on the front. Trooper's helmet was custom made so his pointed ears stuck out easily. ****
"Well Sergeant? What do you say?" Lt Smith smiled at his K-9 police brother.
"You drive a hard bargain Lieutenant!!! Fine rookie Officer Stise will become Officer Stise or he'll die trying in the attempt." Trooper turned and looked at his future boss.
"Good" The head motorcycle cop smiled and began turning away, but then turned around again.
"Oh Sergeant, I'm not one to tell an FTO especially one of your reputation how to teach." Smith held up his hands, he didn't want to come across as being pushy.
"No its fine sir I'll accept any ideas if it helps to make dimly Lit a better cop" Trooper words were truthful. He did after all want to get on the motorcycle division. He looked at Smith waiting to hear what suggestion he had.
"Why don't you try being nice to him" The react was the same as if Lt Smith just poured a gallon of cod liver oil down Trooper's throat.
"Sir you got to be kidding me, they don't call it the mean street for nothings. We need hard nose police officers not the son of Mary Poppins!!" Trooper protested.
"And has your normal methods worked?, Sergeant? Try building up his confidence, get to know him. What do you know about him?" Smith asked tapping Trooper on his shoulder
"He's an idiot that shouldn't breed" the K-9 quickly responded, it was no secret that Trooper hated his trainee.
"Name one instance where he screwed up enough to warrant getting kicked off the force!" Smith demanded. Placing his hands on his duty belt the way most cops did.
"He hit a fire hydrant!" Trooper said without even pausing to think.
"As I recall there was Ice and snow on the ground Sgt. "The Lt said trying to defend the rookie cop.
"The SQUAD CAR WAS PARKED SIR!!" Trooper tried hard not to lose his temper. Many police officers messed up when they first started. But his Stise hit a fire hydrant while the police car was still in park.
"Sorry Sgt. Timberwolf but If you can't make Stise into a cop then you don't get on my motorcycle squad." Lt. Smith turned and walked back to where Capt Bimbo was.
"ALL RIGHT I'LL DO IT, I'LL MAKE NICE WITH THE BRAINLESS HUMAN" Trooper dropped his head but he wasn't about to lose his chance to get what he wanted. And turn and walked off to join up with his trainee.
Lt Smith looked at Capt. Bimbo and smile triumphantly.
"I didn't think you could pull it off Terry" Captain Bimbo said, the mayor's office was getting on Bimbo's case as to why Stise was still a rookie cop. Mayor Moneygrubber wanted to show the good people of Eagleton that he was a great leader and show off Stise as the symbol of Eagleton's police department.
"You want the mayor off your back don't you?" Terry smiled back then added, "You owe me $20.00 bucks."
