Description Material: Finger on Smartphone (tiny! It's a pain in the neck! don't do it!)
Software: Ibis Paint X

This is my very second digital painting ever. I'm still figuring this out but I'm amazed by how it turned out.

One side is not totally symmetrical but I've been drawing this with the finger on my phone after all, so... come on!
I'm using the App Ibis Paint X and I'm pretty pleased with what it offers. However, I'm not going to continue drawing on the phone, trying to tweak pixels (on a 5 inch display).
I just invested in a graphics tablet and I'm already excited to try it out

Hello there!

I'm from ProjectComment and I want to give you some feedback on your artwork, I hope you find it helpful.

I will look at both the regular sized artwork and the miniature 'thumbnail' version of your painting in your gallery because I see some big differences in terms of visual appeal. With the smaller image, it's easier to let your details come together. I think with this normal sized version, the harsh transition of soft blurred strokes and thin sharp strokes don't look very, well... 'lookable'. I suggest you to use your big blurred strokes on the outer areas and reserve the thin strokes for the centre of the image (around the eye preferable) so the eye doesn't get automatically drawn towards areas of the image that have near to no particular interest on them (like the raven's cheek in this painting). I suggest you to roughly paint out what you want to portray and slowly decrease your brush size towards towards the centre.

Aside from that, I think you have a good sense of how to place your strokes. The area underneath the raven's beak - for example - has a nice soft touch to it and overall the animal looks quite fluffy and friendly (maybe also because the beak looks so exaggerated towards the 'camera'. Also, the reflection in its eye look pretty realistic, just - again - use sharper strokes in those areas.

The only other flaw I could spot here is that the division of the beak where both upper and lower jaw divide, is not exactly drawn out. The mouth shape is therefore non-existent even though you implied there to be one.

Lastly I want to address your background. I'm not saying it doesn't fit to your raven, in fact, it really does! But yet again, the contrast from blurred strokes to sharp shapes distracts the eye. Try to use more blurred backgrounds or find a perfect middle, then it all should be fine.

Hope it helped!

Thank you for your honest, constructive comment! This is exactly what I need to improve my work. Big Thanks

This gave me some really good insights. I will work on the sharp and blurriness and I think I will have to look a little bit more into brushes too.
I must admit that I had no idea what to do about the background, so this was my half hearted attempt to finally finish the picture. But you're right about it.

I‘m very glad you found this so helpful!
And for a half-hearted attempt, this background looks really well done :3

Well, you have to zoom in very, very close and then modify the pixels It was so much work!

Oh yes, it's so interesting how a picture can look completely different depending on wheather you look at it from close up or from a distance.

Looks amazing for being a drawing made with a finger on a smarthphone, one thing i want you to notice is that the lower part of the beak it's missing (it's more like their fused together).
Just wanted to let you know

Thanks for your honesty! that's really great ^^
Yeah, the picture I took as a reference didn't really have a clear line where the two parts of the beak meet but it might have been better to emphazise it more in the drawing, you're right. I haven't thought of that. Thanks for pointing it out

I absolutely love much of a realistic taste is put forth in this piece.  Also the feeling, it radiates pure curiosity and the whole piece gives off a feel of childhood, it’s so cute in a naive way.  The lighting in those little perky energetic beady eyes speaks in fast toung in the piece!  I very much appreciate all the effort, and detail that was thrown into this painting!  But the fluff on the feathers look a bit fake like you rushed to get these features onto the beak as fast as possible.  But over all it looks great!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you so much for your constructive comment! I haven't thought of it that way ^^
Yes, I think you're right about the feathers on the beak. I should probably experiment some more with brushes. Thanks for pointing it out. I easily overlook things, that's why I'm so happy to hear a second opinion.

I'm glad you like it!

Wow. Really nice job on the perspective here. There is just something so cute about birds looking straight at the viewer.... unless it's a vulture. Those things are scary.
