Yeah, its a bit tricky. I really need to get a light meter! Its on the list but I'm running out of money. Your photographs seem quite a bit better than mine though!!

reet good, maybe should of put both flashes either side of him so there isent one side of shade? or maybe some rim lighting but dont quote me on this as i dont own two flashes or wireless combo mombo

I find the shadows add depth though. There was a flash to the left of the camera and also one to the right, but further away. I think one was set to 1/2 and the other 1/4 power. I think i should have had them both set to the same, and just varied the distance...but we live and learn eh.
