I think alan-whit is just trying to help you define your shots more.
Personally my 3 categories for actino shots are-
Focus on the rider
Focus on the stunt
Focus on the glamour/art
Since this doesnt show the takeoff/landing, it isnt the 2nd. You cant really see the rider up close so it isnt the first, and it really isnt the third (which is usually the still life kinda perfect studio lighting shot).
It's a good picture tho, the flash does help the rider pop out of a messy background. I like how the tree behind him seems ot be "framing" the front of his body, but I do agree that you have to subject it a bit more.

What are you trying to show off? The Rider, the Location, or is it an artistic shot? If its all three then OK, showing off the rider is good by having the tires inine, but the crop needs to be tighter. and to show off the location there needs to be something on the ground posibly out of focus. I like this location because of the shiluetes that can be made with the trees.
all my views are personal - Alan

~MTBfreeride is all about riding shots.
As a riding shot it's not meant to reveal the location Flash was used to pick out the rider, Brad, from the hideous tree-filled background. Messy backgrounds such as this are a pain in the arse to shoot with, as something more plain is preferable to draw attention to the rider. Hence using flash.
As for the crop, something this loose gives a greater feel for size and surrounding, whilst also carefully avoiding location as mentioned above. To crop it tighter would have given a fuller image so to speak, but a lot of key unique elements to the photo would have been lost in doing so.
Also, if the ground was in shot, there is no way it could have been thown out of focus Unless I shot it from directly overhead in the sky that is.
Hope that clears a few things up for you

OK, I think you miss understand me!
* I don't care where your locations are.
* If mtbfreeride is all about "riding shots then I recormend looking at Aphtermath's Gallery as I think he has some great shots.
* Third, finally, and most importantly, any comment that I make on any of your photographs is a purely personal comment and merely a surgestion to what I would may have done.
