Description
I was bored and just wanted to draw something... so I saw the beta turtle which was a PokΓ©mon meant to appear in Gold and Silver, but never saw the real light [link]So I tried to color it in todays Sugimori style and also tried adding some textures (paper-ish)

I love how it seems like the pokemon BW team found this little turtle and thought "Hey, that's a good idea"

I really like the fact that this beta Pokemon was the inspiration for what became one of the coolest fossil Pokemon ever, Tirtouga!

Kind of a shame it never got to be an official pokemon, it has such a cool design.

The shading looks a little sharp for Ken Sugimori's style, but the paper texture was a great addition considering it's a lost PokΓ©mon. Now I just got an urge to sprite this guy into GSC...
Sugi-style or not, good job.

"Fire Pikachu" lol Honoguuma is actually a bear, so I'm not sure if it is quite okay to relate it with Pikachu.

Woah, this is a surprise.
The way you colored it is interesting. It's like a mix of Sugimori's old R/B/Y/G/S/C "painted" style, and his current "smooth" R/S/E/,etc. style.

I actually like that design, and beautiful job on the coloring makes it look so smooth.

Awesome!
It's a shame this one never became a true Pokemon, it's a great design! I heard Tirtouga's design comes from it, though.

Nice recreation! Johto is a bit incomplete because it was not made to standalone and it was also left with patches in the quilt to hide the problems of the Gen I-II engine.
And is Tirtouga a Gen V PokΓ©mon?

Yep, local fossil along with Archen
It's also the only fossil to not have Rock as its primary type (water/rock rather than rock/water)

UltamiteLifeForm360 [2012-02-19 03:42:47 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, maybe it was going to be the resident fossil of Johto, like Kanto before and Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova afterward
Just goes to show how incomplete Johto feels to me...

Totally agree with you there. Johto felt like an expansion pack for gen 1 rather than a different generation. this would've been cool to have as a fossil (even though we have tirtouga now)

You have read my mind. Of course, pretty obvious with a Psychic type as your icon but still
Johto IS an expansion pack... Well not literally, but as I've explained to my friends multiple times on end
Gens I, III, and V were the most original
Gens II, and IV exist only to fix what was wrong with the previous generations
