They glided quietly down the bare stone hall then down a wide stair. Another door lead into a cavernous room more than forty paces across with gigantic, twisted columns supporting an unseen roof.

Almost half-way across the room, the light of a distant torch stopped Korik in his tracks. He flung out his arm to halt Nelya and stepped behind a column. Leaning out, he could just see three men wearing the black robes of a priest but the glint of mail underneath told him they were temple guards.

“Why did there have to be three,” he thought. “One could be handled quietly, maybe even two…but three?” With three there was bound to be enough noise to bring the whole place running.

“No wonder these Southern gods had been so mute about my thieving,” Korik mumbled under his breath, “They were just waiting for the right moment.”

He took a deep breath and shifted his grip on the hilt of his sword. He could only see one way…
