Description
I've recorded the coloring process on this commission, if you're interested in watching. It's separated into 3 parts. The very first recording which had more on the AI Archie, (the pink creature) had an error while recording. So technically, this is more like part 1.5 lol
Part 1: youtu.be/XAj9gyFE_yo
Part 2: youtu.be/3B74tgR5f0Q
Part 3: youtu.be/GqAkDq5U7_o
Anyways, This is a commission for a good friend of who I know as BleuHunter1 on Deviantart. These are her two OC's, the A.I. named Archie, and Risk, a Drone / Elite splice. The commission was to have Risk watching the final message from an A.I. as it's slowly disintegrating in his hand. More info about them can be found on BleuHunter1's page. bleuhunter1.deviantart.com/
I'm using a Wacom Intuos5 touch Pen and Tablet on Photoshop CS5.
If you can't read the small print in the video I'll give a brief on what I'm doing.
The base colors such as the skin color on RIsk, which is brown, is on a normal layer mode on the bottom. I'm using a lower opacity when coloring and using the background color as a form of shading. Slowly adding more solid brown as I work. I do have a lot of free brushes for textures, but you'll have to discover that on your own.
On top of that skin layer is a "Dark" layer set to Subtract, and using a medium neutral grey to color with. What the Subtraction layer mode does is make that layer react over the layers beneath it to a darker COLOR of what it's covering. By using grey over the brown, I then get a darker brown that does not have any hints of grey in it. This is where color theory comes in.
The same effects I use for lighting the colors. By using the same grey and a layer over all of it, I can lighten the colors beneath it by setting that "Light" layer to Divide. Divide works the same way that Subtract does in that using a grey causes the colors beneath it to a lighter COLOR of itself without any hints of grey.
This technique is good for having multiple colors and wanting a darker effect like with this scene.
After I color it, I then use a texture to smear the colors smooth. The texture tool I use is on a low scatter setting and is meant for skin texture. The majority of the brushes I have and use are all free and can be found online. I don't really have any links because really, it's just by chance. However, Deviantart has a great selection! I suggest looking there first.
The smearing isn't going to be the smoothest like what I would do for metal objects. I also wanted this to mainly be focused on the expressions and having darker contrasts help create that intense feeling. So, after I shaded the drawing, I then made one more layer set to Multiply on top of everything as a final shading. To be honest, this layer is more like a shading layer rather than shading. Shading, to me, is when I make things darker, but a shadow is something that is cast onto one another because of the light. The light source is casting shadows, and I put those shadows on a separate layer. I then used a filter on the shadows in a radial zoom to help spread out the shadows as the source of light is the focus of it all. I also changed the shape of the A.I.'s glow to something more like a light bulb to make it easier to see the A.I.
I guess that wraps it all up. If you have any questions on how I did this, just ask me below in the commentary section.
