Description Opening spread for an article in The Alpinist magazine ( www.alpinist.com/ ), spring 2014 issue.

The article is about some prolific rock climbers from a past era who, among other things, were notably good at desert climbing.

You mentioned that "the article is about some prolific rock climbers from a past era."  Based on the Volkswagen Bus and the piece's overall style (especially the people), I'm guessing that you're referencing the 1970s/1980s.  And I think I spot a New Mexico license plate. 

Great piece.  Gives me a good feeling.

The author of the article met a great climber, Harvey Carter, while he was on his death bed. Harvey had a climbing career that spanned 60 years, and had thousands of first ascents. The experience made the author contact several of Harvey's old climbing friends to talk about Harvey, climbing, and life in general. So, while many of the events in the article took place in the 70's, it spanned several decades. 

I did try to make the painting feel like the 70's because that was a time when this group of climbers was particularly prolific and they were really changing the idea of what was possible in desert climbing. The license plate New Mexico because I grew up there, the tower that can be seen in the background is actually in Utah though.
