This reminds me of Marius and Cosette's first encounter in the Luxembourg Gardens (Victor Hugo, Les Miserables). Jinora is the type to offer a friendly smile; then Skoochy would think, Is she looking at me?

Victor Hugo wrote so poetically about Cosette's first glance at Marius … That's what this made me think of. It's exactly the same, with the girl offering an innocent smile, not knowing the effect she's having on the boy, who realizes for the first time who and what he's looking at.

my original idea is that either jinora flew overhead and looked back at Skoochy, or Skoochy was thinking of what happened that morning when she flew overhead and nearly sent his hat flying ^^
