it has a naturalistic more real feeling than most artwork I've seen. To my eyes it doesn't look like the game art, but yet is clearly Link. I've shared this on my artist fb page. I love it.

No, I do not use line art to help me out - but I do sketch a little bit over painted shapes to guide me back if I'm off on something. Thank you for the comment

I'm joking of course...don't hurt me. Seriously though, all of your portraits have this life about them, especially with the eyes, they're very piercing. I love your style too, not too realistic, but not really all that cartoony either. A nice mix that I think captures the Zelda characters well, particularly here. I love the brushwork here too, impressionistic like the game.
