Description
The Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz - Birkenau was founded by the SS in June of 1940 in the suburbs of Oswecim, the territory of Poland incorporated within the Third Reich. Prisoners were housed in the pre-war Polish Army barracks (Auschwitz I).Initially, the camp was used for Polish political prisoners; after 1942 it become the largest camp of annihilation of Jews and Gypsies. Transports with the deported Jews arrived here from all Nazi controlled European countries. Most of Jews found by the SS doctors to be unfit for work were immediately sent to gas chambers and killed with Cyclone B gas. Those who were sent to the camp as prisoners were forced to perform back-breaking labor for the German industry and the camp itself. Prisoner died of hunger, disease, in executions, medical experiments and through tortures during interrogations by the camp Gestapo.
Their bodies were cremated in crematoria furnaces or on cremation pyres. Their luggage was sorted in the camp warehouses called "Canada" and then taken to the Reich proper.
On January 27th 1945 the camp was liberated by the Russian troops.
---
The exact number of victims is hard to establish, since most of them were not registered. It is estimated that one and a half million people of various nationalities, mostly Jews, perished here.

i'm not really sure i can call it beautiful knowing what happened there not so long ago, but i know what you are trying to say i'd rather call it awe.

I think there's beauty in the snow, the fog, and the scattered grass, the trees in the distance... Terrible, terrible things can happen in places that are, themselves, beautiful.

for me (i have no personal connection to the labor camps) that's a place of great suffering and pain for millions of people. They were tortured, hungry and cold. Their blood and ash is in that dirt and there is nothing beautiful there. But, that's just my impression of the place, so it's ok if we disagree

Right,I view it in the same manner, and the acknowledgement of what happened and the grief toward it are definitely stronger than appreciation of natural phenomena. What I am trying to communicate is that it's very bizarre to me that things in nature like the morning light/mist/snow still happen in these places.

Good shots! I would visit Auschwitz. I feel desolation, abandonment seeing your picture but I think it would be nothing compared to what I might try visiting it .

I think this is the best Auschwitz photo I've seen on here. Technically, it's extremely well-done, the light and colours all perfect, not over or under-exposed at all, very true to life, with a lot of depth. Artistically, the impact is just astonishing. How creepy, sad, empty it looks... a true monument to needless, pointless hate. And I happen to be looking at this while listening to this song: [link] the tone of which really suits the picture, and makes it all the more heart-wrenching. Your other Auschwitz photos are amazingly impressive as well.

The soft, misty light makes it seem surreal. Very haunting and depressing and yet somehow morbidly beautiful.

WOOT!! GO RUSSIANS!! Honestly, the Nazis gave us Germans a bad name. We had someone from the US Army come in to speak at school, and he found and liberated one of these camps. Not Auschwitz, but someplace beginning with a B.

So beautiful.....and then to think
that my grand-grand parents walked
this exact same route,
before they were gassed.
A very classy picture, my compliments

A book once put it this way: "Auschwitz is the kingdom of Death."
And it is seemingly so.

hey man, I'd like to say that this is absolutly powerful. I think it is a very valid bit of photogrophy and the emotion here is very deep. Pay no mind to that jerk It sounds like he's just trolling and being a general parisite. Anywho, great job XD peace.

I find plenty of original work to view, just not the above. Your is based on historical hyperbole and outright falsification.

It deserves slamming. I don't think what supposedly happened is true. And this cliche drawing just perpetuates the belief that the so-called holocaust even happened. Therefore it requires slamming. Its not even really up to me. I'm just a truth-seeker.

darklion In reply to testomatic [2007-06-08 06:20:21 +0000 UTC]
out right falsification. hmmm, I love how people procede to speak from their asses just to bring another person down. question. Are you defending the Nazis? Are you saying that what they did was not a big deal and there for this subject matter holds no interest for you? or are you just arrogant. If you don't think this is interesting, don't look? simple. This is not a real critique, it's a slam down and I hate seeing artists have too put up with this crap. I see there's nothing on your sight so that makes you just another poser mingling with the people who actually have some talent. get real kid.

Very strong image. The fog and the perspective between the dark fences create a dreadful atmosphere. The hell on earth indeed.
That's somehow symbolic that I found this exactly on the Holocaust Memorial Day...
