I'm a bit confused about how to color it when it already has a black and white gradient on it. I use GIMP, and when I select the inside of an icon like this it will select one of the colors and not the inside of the outline. I have no idea how to do this.

If I remember correctly, this saves as a .psd file.
It is set up so that each layer is to be locked and colored in. Each step in the shading is a different layer so you don't have to shade it yourself, you just color in the layers I provided.
