Description I made a meme. Because. I wanted to use it. I know there are ones out there like it, but it’s always good to throw in a few more options, right?

This is not a definitive guide to creating a well-rounded character. Let’s just get that out of the way early. Ultimately you have to be your own judge when it comes to how well-balanced your characters are.

If you feel there is any way I can improve on this meme, feel free to tell me about it. I’m a balanced character myself, which means I can’t make everything perfect! q: If I’ve made any oversights or put in something stupid, let me know, by all means.

And now for some Q&A with points I anticipate may cause confusion.

Does ‘positively balanced’ mean it’s better than ‘negatively balanced’?
Not necessarily. ‘Positive’ here simply refers to ‘strong’ (not necessarily good or better) character traits and acts as the opposite extreme to ‘negative’. Somewhere near to a perfect balance (60 points) is usually the best point to aim for.

Is it really bad if my character scores as very positively/negatively balanced (unbalanced)?
Again, not necessarily. Like I said, this isn’t a definitive guide to character creation. Just how perfectly balanced your character should be depends on a great many things, such as the kind of story universe they are in and what role they play in the story.

When is it really inappropriate to have a character score as unbalanced?
Generally, your story’s main character should be a near-perfect balance. If a main character sits at either extreme on the scales they can easily become boring or unpleasant to get to know. Secondary characters don’t need to be as perfect a balance, necessarily, but you should avoid the extremes with them as well for the same reason. Basically, the stronger a character’s presence is in the story, the closer to a perfect balance they should probably be.

Is it different for roleplay characters?
Yeah, the waters get murkier here. Depending on how your fellow roleplayers feel, it may be okay to tip the scales to a positive or especially a negative extreme. If your roleplay character is very positively balanced, they may be viewed as a Mary Sue, which aren’t accepted in many roleplaying communities, but there are definitely exceptions to that all over the place. Most of the time, unless your character is a creature of pure good or evil, it’s safer to treat them as your personal main character and keep them balanced.

What does that word mean?
Erm, you should probably try a dictionary for that one, you’ll get a quicker response. Sorry, I really like fancy adjectives. It’s a problem. T:

Can I use this? Can I edit the colours and draw wacky pictures all over it?
Go for your life, no need to ask. And sure. q:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

muffinpoodle In reply to baldanders [2012-06-29 16:07:14 +0000 UTC]

not a roleplaying game per se, i mean like...a roleplay as in, two or more people having their own characters and making them interact, creating a story together

Used this to see how my characters were going. I tried out some other similar test-thingys but found this one to be the best because it have traits that might not be very obvious, but that's still there. Turns out all of my basic chars where near perfectly balanced, after all.

Plus, I learned a ton of new words and killed several of Google/translate's servers

Thanks for this one, it's awesome! I don't do many memes, but just HAD to do this one! It's great and great looking!

In case you're interested, so far I made two (for two of my main cocmic's OCs)
[link] and [link]
(beware that the latter has a slightly 'revealing' image as the character likes to show off her body tattoo...)

sketchZeppelin In reply to ??? [2012-01-27 16:47:30 +0000 UTC]

I tried plugging in a bunch of established characters (mostly comic book characters) trying to come up with a horribley unbalanced character and the worse i could come up with was Goku from DBZ with an 83.

Its actually kinda hard to come up with a character that falls into either extream unless your actively trying to make them unbalanced.

your chart seems fine to me i just think your score results are a little too broad. I'm thinking 5 points greater or less than 60 is unbalanced and 15 points greater or less is horriblely unbalanced.
Just a suggestion

I actually had alot of fun with the chart even if i had to look up the meaning of some of the adjetives.

Actually, I looked at it after replying to your comment and went ahead and made the revision you suggested. I think it probably is better - not too easy to land a character in 'very' territory, but easy enough to make you want to be kinda careful... I also changed 'perfectly balanced' to 'neutrally balanced', which I think is more appropriate as it doesn't imply actually being perfect or anything else being necessarily bad...and it makes me feel more comfortable giving a bit of leeway to be able to get that score. What do you think?

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

muffinpoodle In reply to sketchZeppelin [2012-12-11 13:51:07 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, maybe you're right, it is hard to have a very positive/negative character by this meme. After all, I did it with one of my own characters who is essentially evil, and didn't score 'very negatively balanced'. Although they are extremes for a reason - because they're extreme. Eh, maybe I'll revise it some day. Actually, you could make a revised version yourself if you wanted?
Thanks for the suggestions (:

This is possibly one of the best things I've seen for a character sheet not that I've looked around to the extreme but I think it's very strong and I'm totally going to use it for some of my characters thanks for making this, it has a very nice design

Very cool!

It makes the person think about how their characters are balanced. Even unbalance doesn't mean much as you have said, but it keeps them thinking and makes them make the hard decisions.
