Description
Watercolours and white ink, June-July 2011, 18x28 cmLuise and Elke on a winter stroll along the Stadtkanal in Potsdam, featuring the once famous garrison church. This photo served as my initial inspiration and reference.
Please note that this thing scanned really badly. I did mess around correcting the colours but they are still not quite right.
This painting has been maturing in my brain since February and lain on my desk for a month or so, progressing infinitesimally slowly. So slowly in fact that in the end I cared little what would become of it. When I finally lifted it off my drawing board, I was pleasantly surprised at what I thought would become another failure. Do not get me wrong; there are a million things that could be so much better, but I was pleasantly surprised nevertheless. This summer I have had a very frustrating job that has left me with little energy to paint, so I am happy to have finished at least something.
The slow process is one of the reasons I am painting a winter picture sitting alone in a very hot room in the middle of summer. Usually I like to paint seasonal pictures because I can draw directly from what I see around me.

well, if you call this pic "scanned badly" and still I'm under the fin-de-siecle'ish charm of it... then the scanner matters not! it's just about the skills.
ah, this reminds me that my town used to be a garrison city as well, I've even promised myself that the history and deeds of the Königlich-Preußisches Grenadier-Regiment König Wilhelm I (2. Westpreussisches) Nr 7 will be a subject of my thorough research ah, kid dreams...

Thanks. I wish my scanner honoured my so-called skills half as much as Your Majesty does.
Liegnitz! Awesome!

Ah it does it does, it just doesn't want to spoil you with them, wanting to feel important I guess!
Yup, Liegnitz it is! With the old nicely Prussian barracks turned into a ...college

Oh dear those colours. Why, why, why winter isn't nearly as charming down here!
It must have something to do with the lack of the Garnisonkirche and the entire city of Potsdam all around, including late XIX century military personnel strolling about.

Indeed. The German Empire had it so much better.

Thank you. You commenting is worthwhile enough. I seldom use a palette of blues (I prefer warm colours) but here it did its job for the lighting.
I would estimate covering your window with tinfoil could lower the morning temperature from "fucking hot" to "damn hot" but might not be worth it if you appreciate the view.
