The young man looked down over the wasteland below. The 18 stories seemed to stretch out before him, as if beckoning him down to the waiting street. He sat on the edge, watching his tears fall. He didn't know anymore how long he had sat here. Time no longer had meaning when he looked out at the world from his aching soul. He looked out over the city, a gray, desolate wasteland that only made him feel more alone. Looking out, he spotted the statue of an angel on the building across from him, and again his tears flowed anew as he was reminded of his love. His whole life he had been alone. He had been neglected and ignored by parents that pretended they loved him only as long as he would be perfect. He had been left behind by the ones around him who only saw him as a strange boy who didn't fit in. Even his brother and sister had forgotten about him, and resented him when they remembered his existance.
Then she came. He had reached out, and she had taken his hand. He called, and she came to him. He loved, and she loved him back. She had changed him. He felt alive for the first time. As if he had been renewed as something that had been worth the life breathed into him. He could ask, and he would recieve. He was needed, and he could give. He would be made happy, and in turn could make her happy. He found someone who saw what he could become, and in doing so, he found a way to show someone what he could be. He had meaning. He was something.
Then, as quickly as it came, it was gone. The rooms suddenly empty. The prescence suddenly faded. His heart suddenly empty again. He was alone again. Falling back into what he had been. He could feel his soul crying as it fell back into the silent, cold, hell that it had finally become free of. He began to wonder. Was he worth saving? Was he meant to have such a thing? Or would all the he gained be taken as quickly as she had? He didn't know. So now he was here.
He stood now. The tears continued to fall. He looked down once more, and he thought of her. All he wanted now was to hear those words again. The ones that had fulfilled him. Had cured the pain he had endured. The words he knew would never come again. He stared one last time around the city. Against his will, his mind would only call her name. Beg of her.
"Please, say it. Say it for me. I'm calling to you. I'm falling now. Please hurry. Say it and I'll leave all of this behind. Say it and I'll show everyone what I really am. Say it, and I'll be worth saving." With these thoughts, he spread his arms and leaned forward into the abyss awaiting him below.
Suddenly, a hand caught his arm, stopping his fall. Pulling him back from the edge. Turning him to face her. For a moment all he could do was stare. Then the tear came a final time, but this time with joy. She smiled up at him, reaching out to stroke his face. He leaned into her touch, feeling it's warmth. She smiled again.
"I love you." And he knew. It was real. She had saved him just by letting him know that he was worth saving. He smiled, and she drew him into her embrace. He kissed her softly, and was alive once more. The warmth of her kiss filled him, lifting him, as 18 stories below, his life ended.
