Too bad there's no room for the whole gang in this comic. But no, ya made sure Spike's outta commission so you don't have to use your imagination to balance him out with the rest of his friends. On that note, Applejack and Fluttershy don't appear to be doing much besides "completing" the M6; in fact, it seems they're about as important as Spike currently is.

Great analysis! You are correct, about Spike, he was left out because he holds little purpose in this comic series and won't be useful until much later. Applejack and Fluttershy are here to, as you stated, "complete" the mane 6. But although Applejack holds a similar position to Spike, Fluttershy's presence is necessary and she will hold an important role in the story. As to how infuential she and the others will be - I'll forgo that information for later pages. It is a comic after all and I'll let the comic tell the story.

Beyond completing the group, of course. These are his only close friends, and he's about to miss out on yet another story that they're all going to enjoy without him. The only MLP-related thing that makes my mood worse instead of better is this biased fucking "toy set" idea that the mane six are an exclusive and complete unit that Spike isn't part of. If this comic were on derpibooru, I'd have downvoted these last three pages.
If there are any characters in any given work of fiction that don't serve a purpose, they shouldn't be there. Applejack is superfluous. Comics (edit: and episodes, fanfics, etc.) like this are the reason I hate the mane six.
