Description (Shadows)

this picture has quite some meaning to me.

First a description of the equipment:
it was done with an old-style studio-camera that can be folded together like a field camera. Made of pure metal and 9x12cm plates (the old-style european format, a bit slimmer than 4x5"). It was the camera of my grandfather and thus I have a special attachment to it too. I cleaned it and restorated it to my best. Only a few plate-hodlers are left and they are in bad shape, so I use this camera very rarely.

This was done with a particular lens, a Superangulon made for a smaller image format, thus it has troubles to illuminate the whole image field, but tha effect is an extreme wide view angle. (the stones in the foreground are almost at my feet)

The scene is inside an old city gate, in Bergamo Alta, I was waiting in the dark (see, one can do street photorgraphy with such a beast, but hidden well behind the dark cloth).
The extreme depth of field is achieved using the Scheinpflug correction, that is by tilting the back of the camera in respect to the lens plane. Exposure was of course determined using a hand-held meter and carefully weighting the scene due to the extreme contrast

The film was the trusty AgfaPan 100, developed in 1+25 Rodinal.

I don't have an enlarger for such a negative, thus I had it professinally printed on fiber-based paper, with a white border and glossy treatment. Really an old-style phtograph that has stunning detail and contrast. I made it as a gift to my grandfather and he appreciated it.

Perfect composition, , great available light control, great depth.
The vigorous B&W contrast and the perspective allowed a strong photo. Nice subject, very well aproched.
The text is very clear and shows the young photographers the hard way traditional photography was done.

Thank you, Jose. Well noted technical comments. I hope that at least some young photographers (I do not think myself of old) will pick up the old b&w technique since it can be very rewarding and is a true "craft".

I don't think they noticed me, even if the camera is of indecent dimensions, was on a tripod and had the black cloth hanging! But probably yes, following the light path they didn't notice me in the dark. Or ignored me as some kind of madman jumped out of the past.

Maybe they will have some ipod-iphone-videocam that plugs in your head. To completely erase any manual ability and zero creativity.

I think that from the technical point of view you need little to learn at the beginning, it is a more a shift of attitude. patience, thinking...
Learn the tecniques later... don't let them shy away.

The photo - and that stone - is amazing - but the DESCRIPTION! Holy smokes. Your grandfather should be proud. If we're lucky there will still be a few people around that can do this when your grandchildren can pick up a camera.

leesaf [2006-05-26 05:37:51 +0000 UTC]

I thought it was a good potograph before I read the description, but now I am amazed. That you could learn to get such results out of such an old camera is very impressive.

The texture in the foreground has a very nice relationship to the silhouettes in the background. From a compositional standpoint, this is a masterpiece. I am sure your grandfather was proud.

I have to come up with something like this soon, my photographer grandfather just gave me all of his equipment, and I really want to impress him with something as impressive as you have done. Fingers crossed.

Bravo, bravo!

I love the manual cameras, though I don't think I have enough equipment or experience to use them to their full potential.
I've got the camera based after your AT-1, the EXee, I think it's great and I would rather use it than my digital. But then it's all down to cost and convenience..
