Description Jessica Rabbit for Battle-Artist (www.battle-artist.com).

This weeks challenge was this fair lady.

I thought about how to avoid just copying directly from the film, and then thought "hey -it'd be awesome trying 2 do a Michael Turner inspired version of it...just to see if i can, and how it'll turn out". Never actually tried to draw like him, but think he was such an amazing artist.
So chose to take Jessica's traits --> HUGE boobs, very narrow waist, sparkly dress and very femme fatale-ish.
The proportions being so exaggerated was kinda doing my head in tbh.

Tried as well to catch a kinda 20's old photograph-sepia feeling.
Most of the film the viewer is left in doubt whether she's good guy or bad guy, so tried to get that feel innit as well.

Btw drawing a gun from front is pretty difficult lol. It's basically like a hole with a handle...how in the world to make that look cool or menacing!?

Well this is a bit of a chancer, cause she deviates so much from the...ehm "real" Jessica, so hope u guys dig it.

Pls pls pls give some criticism, and be brutal! Every little drop is a huge help for me to improve!

really love the piece! okay, so you want some criticism?
her waist is too thin and her arms are too long. being that this more realistic a piece you needed to shorten the arms more and thicken the waist.
the other aspects seem to be working and i really dig the color blending you used. so nice work!

well if it wasnt because of him i wouldnt even know how to draw females.i studied him and j.scott cambell hardcore to develop my style of drawing girls.those guys to me are the masters of drawing the female form, and jim lee before them of course. and dont feel guilty about drawing her in comic book style, cus you sure know i am lol

mumitrold In reply to CRISTIAN-SANTOS [2010-11-21 02:31:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah idd. One thing is to draw a female, but being able to draw it so beautiful and elegant as they do it takes a certain eye (and a helluva lotta time sitting around doodling while ur mates is out drinking and dancing). Always good to fastlane around and look the masters over their shoulders

OMG!!! This is AWESOME!!! I thought of Turner as soon as I saw it so great job there, and he's one of my top 3 favorite artists!

my quick critique:
Let me first say I hate youuuuu, and your awesome-ness!... kidding of course I was worried when we were first matched that I got paired with someone who wouldn't submit anything, looked like a blank account, which would have sucked, so I'm grateful that you posted some stuff, and this.
First: Proportionally I think she's pretty solid, the only thing that might be a little odd is her left wrist being so thin makes that hand look big.
Second: There's no shading under her hair near her bangs on the one side, a small oversight I'm sure.
Third: Maybe bolder, darker lines to make her pop more off the page.
Fourth: The background... I'm not really any good at backgrounds myself so I understand how much easier it is to do a very simple one, if at all. A more engaging background with the right color scheme could make this picture much better than it already is.

I got nothing but praise about the rest, I love the muted color, makes the dress really stand out! I think she needs more bootay, but that's just me
That mic is killer too

I hope my entry measures up.

heeey, lol thanks, it's very sweet of u
Woooohooo I'm happy i managed to convery turner!
...and yeah, kno what u mean about opponent. Luckily (knock on wood) i haven't had a "blank" yet

And THANK U SO MUCH for the criticism!! U have NO idea how happy that makes me!!!

haha u caught my lazy sides spot on. I really such at drawing backgrounds --> will make an effort next time though (see the brilliance of criticism --> I get an arseprodding to stop being lazy).
Also my inking. This one is actually just the pencils i've buffed up a bit in PS. Inking is a whole new chapter that i haven't had the guts the approach for real yet

Yet again, thanks a lot for the critique

naldridge In reply to mumitrold [2010-11-20 16:05:30 +0000 UTC]

Your welcome for the critcism!

Inking is not my favorite thing either, for now I'm opting to "ink" in photoshop which is working out well, its too easy to screw up big time with actual ink, you should try it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mumitrold In reply to naldridge [2010-11-21 02:26:30 +0000 UTC]

ah, i actually tried that, but...let's say I'm pretty mongolized! It's seriously not a pretty sight. My big dream is getting my hands on a cintique. Fat chance that's happening in near future though. So...atm stuck at trying to circumvent the whole inking-thing.

How do u ink in photoshop? What brush do u use? Do u kno any good tutorials floating around online?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

naldridge In reply to mumitrold [2010-11-21 03:53:50 +0000 UTC]

Haha, mongolized, I feel similar most of the time about mine, every now and then I get lucky though. I'm hoping for a cintique myself but I'd have to rob a bank for that.

I just scan a rough sketch into PS, add a layer over top of it, lower the opacity of the rough sketch layer and start "inking". And I zoom pretty close, I'm sure a lot of people do, then viola, you've got clean lines to work with

You'd have to experiment with the brushes to see what works for you, I've just barely scratched the surface when it comes to the brushes.

I like to figure things out myself so I don't use many tutorials, I'm stubborn that way, it would probably save me a boat load of time. ...time to upload my pic

lol @ the smiley!!

AND if u DO decide to rob a bank, can't u nick enuff for a cintique for me too?

Hmm, tried playing around with inking digitally again. I'm COMPLETELY retarded at it! I's actually quite amazing lol.

colors really add to it. Got the noir feel and personally I think it was a great move making her more comic book like as opposed to cartoony. Makes her really edgy and interesting. This could easily have been a Top Cow Comics pin up.
what sells this is the look on her face - pure vamped, smouldering indeed!. Great stuff.
And the revolver is really well done, for a 'hole with a handle' it sure looks like it means business. But that old school mic is one of my fave parts on the whole piece, great throwback to the cartoon.
And we got your trademark sparkles in there too
Difficult to critique without adding 'excellent!'

haha u noticed the sparkly sparkly? I'm sure i was a magpie in an earlier life!

Thanks so much! I'm well happy bout conveying the mike turner -thingy

oooh -go ahead, make my day ..give some criticism, i kno u can (u r almost the only one who does haha). Nah, it's actually quite stunning if u don't have anything -yay!

Btw, it's funny noone's mentioned yet...the microphone-thingy (underneath the top...thing, that u actually sing into) is completely wrong perspective, but oh well. Learning by doing

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

redskullrudd In reply to mumitrold [2010-11-20 00:20:23 +0000 UTC]

yeah I promise to leave any tiny critique for you, but really its getting harder lol pieces like this are way easier to admire than critique. And any critique you get you just come back next week even tougher!
Didn't notice the mic 'issue' you are talking about, I think it looks great, and explainable by those things swiveling anyhow, if you need an out. like i said the hand was mostly the distraction for me, and even that was lessened when you added colors.
I always think hair looks like a pain in the A to draw but you always knock that out the park.

hehe --> thank u sooo much u luvly person!

yay thanks.. it's like design. What i got from that schooling was "it's meant to be that way, it's ASSYMETRIC design, m'kay!"

Yeah, had some serious hair issues which bugged me no end, so sat down a cpl of days and just draw hair all over the place. Still learning, and it's fun to see how different artists do it. Learned something this time from watching how michael turner did it
