I'd always heard that Merlin aged backwards, but I would have thought by the time he was a teenager, Arthur would have to been getting around with a cane.

Scratch that, the series is a complete alternate universe. I don't think it follows the legend at all. The only similarities are the characters.

The BBC version of Merlin almost seems like an AU. Merlin and Arthur meet when they're teenagers, which would explain why they look young, but I'm pretty sure the circumstances of how they meet are different in the actual legend. I don't think Merlin had ever been Arthur's manservant as he's portrayed in the series.

Ha! Ha! He most certainly was not.
According to legend, Merlin was Arthur's teacher and mentor. It was Merlin who taught Arthur all that he needed to know to rule as a just and fair king.
In fact, if you believe certain versions of the legend, then Merlin was the one who was responsible for Arthur becoming King in the first place; as it was his magick that locked the sword in the stone so that only Arthur could remove it.
