It never sat right with me that Spike has wings as an adult dragon in the story, however he doesn’t have wings in MLP FiM, and doesn’t even appear to be able to grow wings. As such, I drew Spike as my headcanon works with him - in Fallout Equestria: On The Bright Side of Death, Spike is an Oriental Dragon, inately different from other dragons, able to fly without wings, and has a fixation on facial hair, which I say, he sports with gusto.
I pity the pony that hurts the stache.

I've always felt that wings were a sort of display structure that start to grow out when a dragon reaches sexual maturity, hence why Spike doesn't have wings (even during his "greed growth," he's still a BABY dragon) and why the teenaged dragons all had such proportionally small wings compared to the various adult dragons we've seen.

I still prefer spike with wings, but my headcanon is that he's supposed to be a small to mid-size dragon that's light and fast rather than the stereotypical gothic dragons that flood Equestria's design board.
Sort of like a hawk, or falcon among eagles. While he isn't as strong, he'll outfly them any day.
