This picture is so.. special. It makes me feel strange. But strange in a good way.
I really like this atmosphere. Great work.

This has to be my favorite picture out of the entire series....
The child's expression matched with the way the woman (his mother?) is reaching out...
It all fits together so well.
Did you take all your pictures during a show or did you get everyone differently?
Did you plan out the backgrounds and everything?
Or anything?
Either way, beautiful shots.
Beautiful models.
I love the confidence in ...was it Torso Girl?
She has this odd erotic air about her, I'm sure she could have gotten far more men (or women) than many girls with all of their body parts.
The lacking need for Photoshop is a great breath of fresh air.

Thank you for your enthusiastic comments. I'll try to address your questions as best I can...
I shoot with a 4x5 camera so shooting live would be nearly impossible even if such a circus existed outside of my own mind. They are created in there entirety for only a brief moment to be photographed. So though it is art, theatre, if you will, it is very real. Nothing is manipulated in the camera, in the darkroom, or in postproduction. Had you been there when I took the photos you would have seen it yourself, exactly as you see it here.
... and yes, Miss Torso has all the male attention she could ever desire...

After looking through your gallery, it pleases me to be able to see just a fraction of the world through your eyes. You have a touching gallery, an amazing display of the kind of beauty in the world that is rarely focused upon. The human body is such a mysterious and wonderful thing, and you've conquered that mystery and wonder in ways so many haven't been able to! It's incredible.
Of of all the photographs in your gallery, this one has to be my favorite. The woman's twisting body, still watching and reaching out to the boy with his distant eyes- Perfection! These two alone are lovely displays of the human anatomy and what it can do and be.

Thank you very much for your kind comments. "Charming, mesmerizing", "sick", "shocking", people are free to draw their own conclusions and take from it what they will. Art, like sideshow, is at it's best when it inpires thought and wonder. I only want to be clear that it is not photoshop because quickly sermizing this to be digital manipulation is a quick dismissal of that "thought and wonder".

This is really incredible. I find it charming and mesmerizing in every way. Can't think why someone would call this sick...but hey some people enjoyed Carnivale and some enjoyed Lost.
Anyway you can think that the child has his hands behind his back and he's more flexible then other people so it looks like they are missing. Maybe this will "unshock" some people
Great gallery and work, but I'd like to see more, many more

I am enamored with this entire series, both because of my natural inclination toward your devotion to pristine process as well as the subject matter-which is a source of particular fascination. For me first there were the sideshow remnants at Coney Island close to where I once lived, then 'Freaks' which has inspired me visually for years and the only live experiece-Jim Rose & his Sideshow. Never tried to photograph the subject myself. Let me know when the book is complete.

Thank you very much. I've always been intriqued by carnivals and sideshows. Loved "Freaks" and Todd Browning's other little ditty "Dracula". I did a shoot with Jim Rose about 13 or so years ago...

The time I spent with them brought that interest heavily into my consciousness. I'm finally tapping into the images that have haunted my brain for years. The book should be out in about a year. I will definately announce it.

i love your photography. it's great how you can capture such an image without the need to use photoshop. now i have a question, i hope it's not a stupid one...
the boy, is he missing arms or are they just behind him?

munkyhaus In reply to Sinjintek [2006-12-13 16:43:38 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much. That's not a stupid question, but I want this collection/book to be like a real sideshow experience, and like the sideshow it should ask more questions than it answers. The art happens in your imagination and your wondering.
It is ultimately more satisfying to the viewer to try to imagine who these people are and what their lives are like, than it is to try to debunk them.

What a touching photograph, you have captured very genuine emotion and sadness. On the technical side, this is a wonderful homage to the photos of circus and sideshow performers, well-executed and beautifully shot.
