Description Finally got to sling some ink and colors on the initial sketch of 's original character Reckless, done for the 4K kiriban. I think he may be a bit too blue rather than black? Heh, trying to draw either black or white equines is challenging. A black and white equine moreso. This was a lot of fun!

This was inked with a Tombo brushmarker, with initial colors laid down with a combination of Copic and Marvy markers, then touched up in Paintshop Pro after scanning.

Needless to say, Reckless belongs to . I hope I did him justice.

I can't believe how gorgeous he looks! And I could swear it was Photoshop work if you hadn't said it was traditional! I'm so in love with this pic of Reckless! His pose, colouring and the feel of it are all sooo amazing!

So glad you like him! The under-coloring and inks are all traditional, just the touch ups are digital.

Thank you! A coal black horse can have a blue shine, so I went for it. Last time I used blue I ended up with a purely blue horse, so I'm glad if he looks black with a bluish shine.

Oh yeah... Well I knew that black horses can have a blue shine, but only under the right light (like sunlight~!). The pinto markings are just made of awesome... Just forgot to mention that last post.

A true black horse is a thing of beauty and rather rare. Horses that are dark bay or deep brown-black tend to have a red shine in the sun even though they look black to our eyes. has a great design sense for pintos.

You're not wrong there... Reckless just looks amazing.

Blacks are rather beautiful, but I really like palominos as well. Got a sentimental attachment to that particular colouring, mainly because the first horse I ever rode was a palomino.

Best behaved horse I've ever come across.

Palominos are lovely, too. I knew a wonderful palomino blanket appy who was such a fun character. Wonderful old horse.

I was going to ask for a Palomino blanket appy colt for Gilraen, but the black varnish roan appy won out. I was like 'omg don't make me choose!'

Very pretty. I love the painterly effect and the blue overlay on the black parts as well as the grey and subtle cream colors on the white. Are you going to do anything else with the background?

Murasaki99 In reply to Diinzumo [2008-05-12 04:28:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I'm glad it came out looking decent, the black and white is a total challenge. *cracks knuckles* Um... the background? my brain ran out of inspiration, so I left it "open" rather than risk ruining it. A grey rainscape might look good -- I might try doing that on a separate layer and adding it later.

Re. background: Yeah, I've been there and still am. You're rightβ€”a separate layer would be great because you don't run the risk of messing up the entire image if the background doesn't work out the way you like it.

Murasaki99 In reply to Diinzumo [2008-05-13 03:33:37 +0000 UTC]

And I have this weird thing going where I just find it easier to compose the background as a separate piece from the foreground. Like animation backgrounds. It seems easier to me to attack the background as a complete painting or drawing and then add whatever is on/in the landscape.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Diinzumo In reply to Murasaki99 [2008-05-13 05:37:36 +0000 UTC]

I don't think that's a weird thing. It makes perfect sense to me. Just so long as the final piece doesn't look like two separate images.

Murasaki99 In reply to Diinzumo [2008-05-13 06:15:09 +0000 UTC]

So far, so good on that. I think. I used a layered background for Dark Water and Neeon, and the watercolor that I use for Morrow's part of Urcaen is a complete image.

I remember the pastoral scene, but didn't realize you also did Dark Water that way. That turned out nice.

Murasaki99 In reply to Diinzumo [2008-05-13 13:46:37 +0000 UTC]

Dark Water is constructed almost like a multiplane animation cel -- there is a background behind the horse, and then some layers of translucent color on top of the horse and background. Disney knew their stuff.

Diinzumo In reply to Murasaki99 [2008-05-13 14:13:31 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. I love the whole transparent layer thing. I did some of that on "Daddy's Girl 2."

And that had some lovely glow-effects!

Those layers really help for when we want to work on fixing/adding colors. It took me forever to realize how powerful layers can be, but now I'm a big fan of them.

Thankies! Heh-heh, nope, just markers and some Paintshop Pro to tweak the colors. I haven't yet tried full digital inking. I have tried digital painting -- I'm very slow at it (then again, I'm not terribly fast with physical paints, either). I like the brush markers for a sort of sumi-e effect.
