Description
------------------------------Oct. 14 2009------------------------Here you go, the whole thing at last! I hope you enjoy it.
I added the actual techniques for making spots, plus notes. Let me know if anything is too confusing and I'll try and fix it.
I'm not trying to do a full coloring or digital line art tutorial, there are a bunch of excellent ones out there on DA - I have links to many of them in my favs: [link]
Got the Spot Tutorial finished Tuesday night, but could not upload it due to the fact the massive Microsoft patch was hogging all the bandwidth on my home network. The tutorial is kind of large, so it was not going to upload gracefully. Tonight is much better now that all my home systems are patched.
------------------------------Oct. 12 2009------------------------
This is the start of my promised "Spot Tutorial". Very much a work in progress with no notes on it yet. Stay tuned, I'll be adding notes and the spots in the next few days.
Of course, to make spots, first we need the horse. These steps show in a nutshell my coloring process, starting with a scanned pencil sketch and proceeding through several layers to produce the base colored horse.
I usually keep the base body color and the mane/tail coloring on separate layers. It makes later color adjustments easier.
I am using Paint Shop Pro 7 for the artwork, but the techniques will work in any graphic program that gives you layers, including the GIMP. I should try this in ArtRage too, I'll bet it would look pretty good.
------------------
It's been weeks since I uploaded any artwork, so I had to get something put up tonight/this morning. This is what I get for trying out WoW... an amusing time-sink but not so good for art-production.

Is that grainy look inherent to psp, or is that your style?

the grainy look is how I do a lot of shading - with the airbrush set on "coarse" grain.

I love my PSP - I've used it for years and it does pretty much what I need it to do.

WooHoo!! Welcome back!
This is cool! I'd been wondering now you did the shading on your horses.

Thankies.
I do shading with great variability, but this is the basic technique when I am making a "mostly digital" horse with spots or other fun markings. Layers are my friend. It took me years to figure that out, but now...

I hear you about the layers. The only drawback is making sure you're painting on the right one.

Yep, I have done that before, mixed up my layers.

Hahahahaha, yeah, my love and I got back into our WoW accounts after taking a break pretty much since right after Wrath of the Lich King expansion came out, lmao, and I'm worried that he's going to drag me on to play a lot now and I won't get to work as much on my artwork, lmao.

It's true, WoW sucks up time, but it is SO much fun. It is the first-ever MMORPG I have ever tried. The art just amazes me. I love my night elf druid.
