Among other things, faulty logic. While I'm opposed to the death penalty, I admit to great vicarious satisfaction when a killer meets 'just deserts'. If only we could do it without error. But, that will never happen, and that's an empirical reason for opposition. there are also sound philosophical grounds for opposition.

It's all based off of Hammurabi's Law which is a basic law system that means that the person will have to pay for their crimes. Stealing something would mean you got your hand cut off. Killing someone means you yourself must be killed. In a way, it's like the punishment fits the crime. Obviously, we don't really follow the entirety of Hammurabi's Law, but that's where the idea of "an eye for an eye" comes from. Not saying it's right or that I agree with it, but that's why.

We DON'T kill people who kill people to show people that killing people is wrong.
We kill people who kill people to show people who are THINKING about killing people that if they DO they're gonna DIE. Since most people don't wanna die, hopefully this will show them they also don't wanna kill.
Also, after we kill somebody who's killed somebody, they're NEVER gonna kill anybody EVER again. That's guaranteed.
This doesn't help determine whether or not Capital Punishment is a good idea. Simply giving a rational answer to the question.

We kill them so other people know what might happen if they do that. That, and we really don't want a serial killer/psycopath running around in either a prison or life.

It is a powerful statement, but I am afraid I must disagree with it.
A person who's killed many people is not only against Man's law but against God's law. With any law brings peace and security to society and if that security is broken then the peace is lost and panic becomes absolute.
Broken laws must have consequences to restore order. The punishment for "killing people," or taking one life should be repaid with a life. The person in which whom ended lives should be executed. Why should they have the right to continue their life when they ended others so shortly? What good will come from it if they live and repent for their sin? They can repent to God's law and be forgiven, but man is not so forgiving.
The Murderer will never be forgotten no matter how much they change. Society does not forget things like that. So ending that person's existence will restore peace and security to everyone else.
My point is, Capital punishment is a good thing. It keeps us safe knowing that if anyone started killing people, we will be safe in knowing that when that person is caught, they will be taken care of and we can continue living a peaceful life.
