I know I'm waaaay late to the party on this one, but I've been meaning to do this for like three years--it looked like so much fun!...actually, can you be late to a party you haven't been invited to?

Oh! Since it's 2020 now, your next Creepazoid set could be based on some 1920s stuff! I know you already had that "Golden Age of Weird" set, and I really liked it, but maybe you could put a new "100 years later" spin on it, like an old, post-apocalyptic 1920s thing, like after the ideals of the 20s came crashing down (such as something based on a broken record or radio, and some broken-down Version 2's of your original GAOW Creepazoids). If you want it to be more optimistic, you could just make a more futuristic 20s thing, like something based on what 20s people thought the future would be like, and maybe fusing it with some more modern aesthetics.
Also something based on preschool puppet shows, stuffed toys, and nursery aesthetics, whether its aesthetics are more "Beatrix Potter" or "Sesame Street" or "lullaby a kid to sleep", maybe with some good ol' corruption involved if you wanted to get edgy with something so saccharine. I love that aesthetic! (when it's not annoying)

Oh, that's an interesting idea! It could almost be like Bioshock--a fancy art deco world that's now in shambles! Especially the angle of a society that's "too big to sustain itself". That could be fun to play around with!
Ah, that could be cool, too! The nursery rhyme and kid-oriented aesthetic is something I haven't really delved into yet. I had a rough idea in mind for a Mother Goose-type theme, so I might be able to work some of your ideas into that! Thanks for the inspirations! ^_____^

Bioshock was exactly what I was thinking of! If you don't think it would be too mean and too soon (and I'm terribly sorry if you think it is), you could semi-subtly incorporate some of the crap that's been going on right now, like the virus and the fires.
Maybe also have one Creepazoid represent a ray of hope that maybe we'll be able to learn from our mistakes and make the future at least a little better, possibly coupled with a counterpart representing a more nihilistic outlook on the future from here, namely that we had our chance and blew it, and there's nothing we can do but suffer the consequences.
I'm very glad to have inspired you!

Yeah, I love Bioshock! Your concept actually reminds me of another set I had planned, but haven't really fit it into the schedule yet--it would be a similar feel to Just Deserts in tone, but would be an art deco deep sea disaster set instead, sort of like the Titanic, but more around the 1920's or '30s! It could be a mix of ghostly victims of the sunken ocean liner as well as monstrous denizens of the deep.
But that's an interesting idea, too! Man has certainly made quite a mess of the world so far! I think poking fun at it wouldn't be too mean. That's satire, right? Yeah, that's an interesting angle to take! It all comes down to learning from what we're doing, or just continuing to make a bigger mess. I've always liked to believe that good can't help but prevail, even though it doesn't always seem that way. But, you know, people are usually blind to progress when they're so distracted/afraid of the bad things around them. I guess it's all about perspective!

That new set sounds awesome! Speaking of nautical stuff, maybe a gloomy set based around a rainy, foggy harbor full of fish-people? I guess there's the pirate set, but still... maybe something based on a downpour?

MurderousAutomaton In reply to ChocolateChipKraken [2020-02-13 05:31:16 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I like that gloomy idea! I have been wanting to explore other nautical themes, aside from the art deco/Titanic one. I'm really drawn to northeast imagery--like lighthouses, nets, schooners, ropes, buoys, lobsters--turn-of-the-century nautical stuff. That foggy theme might work well with that, like a haunted harbor. That'd be fun! Thanks for the idea!
A more general "downpour" theme could be interesting, too... not that rain would be the main theme, but something all the characters might have in common. Like a creepy, small town theme, but everything is also wet and cold and drab. Almost like The Ring. I'll have to think about that one!

Oh, a set based on DeviantArt itself? That's interesting! Definitely something to think about! Some guys at work thought a Creepazoid set based on the people I work with would be fun! Nobody here on dA would really get the references, but it would still make for some cool designs!

Also gotta say chocolate-dipped nuts and Sega are some pretty strong likes. Especially the latter. I've come to love a lot of their arcade games

Thank you, sir! Ha! Yeah, chocolate-dipped nuts are hard to beat! And Sega's been a favorite of mine since the late '80s! I was a die-hard Sega kid all through the '90s and up to the Dreamcast failing. Since then it's been a slow decline. Sigh... oh, Sega... But yeah, I was always a huge fan of their IPs--Golden Axe, Shinobi, Sonic, Eternal Champions, Jet Set Radio, and I'm super excited to play the new Streets of Rage game! That's long overdue!

Sega's old games really are absolute classics. SoR4 is gonna be good, I hope!
I sadly played mostly SNES. Never had much Sega experience until later. Never played the Shinobi games though. How do you like them?

MurderousAutomaton In reply to StarGamerWorld [2020-02-09 00:14:25 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, totally! I have no idea when it comes out--I actually thought it was supposed to be last year! Hopefully it's soon...
Ah, the SNES was a solid system, too! We had that one as well! At the time, Clay Fighter was exclusive to the SNES, so we had no choice! It had a lot of other great games, too--a far superior version of TMNT Tournament Fighters, as well as some really cool Capcom and SNK games! Mega Man X, Saturday Night Slam Masters, King of the Monsters II--good times! ^____^

There were a lot of amazing games on the SNES. I actually didn't have many for fighting games. Mine were mostly platformers. This may go without saying, but did you play a ton of fighting games back in the day?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
MurderousAutomaton In reply to StarGamerWorld [2020-02-13 05:45:12 +0000 UTC]
Ah, platformers were great! I loved the Sonic series, Alex Kidd, Wonderboy, as well as run-and-gunners like Gunstar Heroes and Shinobi. What were some of your favorite platformers?
Oh, YES! I love fighting games! Nothing beats the old 2D fighters--today's games are cool and innovative, but I just loved the look and feel of the old sprites. I played the hell out of Street Fighter II, Alpha and III, as well as SNK's fighters, like Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, World Heroes, etc. I also loved Capcom's Marvel games, especially Marvel Super Heroes and Marvel vs Capcom 2. My all-time favorite might be the Darkstalkers series--the character designs and animations are absolutely perfect! I also really liked Eternal Champions, a fighting game Sega made for the Genesis and Sega CD. It wasn't a very bit hit, but it's got a cult following.

Fighting games definitely are a lot of fun. I never quite got into them in the past. Heck, I only really starting understanding a lot of the deeper mechanics lately
But boy, yeah, the Darkstalkers series looks amazing. I did play a bit of it, and it's so much fun, though I'm pretty terrible at it. Wish Capcom would do more with it though
I know Eternal Champions too, though I haven't really played it myself. Can you imagine Sai in either of those series?

MurderousAutomaton In reply to StarGamerWorld [2020-02-23 23:15:24 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, fighting games can be kind of a pain sometimes, especially how people play them nowadays. You have to know all the ins and outs of each character. I kind of preferred the ones from the '90s--I've always been a sucker for nice pixel art!
Absolutely! Capcom had teased a few years ago that a new Darkstalkers game was coming, but then nothing happened. Dang! Hopefully they're return to it eventually.
Yeah, Sai in Eternal Champions would be so much fun! I'll have to get back to our email discussion--this week's been kinda busy! Sorry I've been slow to respond!

Good pixel art is really amazing! It may not be your style, but definitely check out Skullgirls. The fact that it was hand-drawn and done from pixels is quite mind-boggling.
I do miss Darkstalkers, yeah. I admit I don't really like their fighting games for the past... decade or so, and I'm hoping they may move onto something new and exciting.
I look forward though to the email response, when you can. It'd be fun to continue that

Oh, yeah, Skullgirls is great! I love the animation, and how it pays homage to games like Street Fighter and Darkstalkers! One of the newer characters, Big Band, has some of the coolest 2D sprites I've ever seen in a fighting game!
Yeah, I had trouble getting into 3D fighting games. I like Virtua Fighter and Soul Caliber, but somehow Street Fighter and King of Fighters just don't feel the same in 3D. It hasn't been the same for me since Street Fighter III. I played SFIV quite a bit, but never enjoyed it as much as I thought I would. I know if they brought Darkstalkers back, it'd be in 3D, but I think it'd still be awesome! I just love the characters so much!
Man, sorry I've been so bad with replies lately! Things are kind of all over the place, work-wise. I'll try to get caught up with emails this weekend!
