Is it just me, or does Pride look like Marilyn Manson playing Omega?

Good eye! Yeah, I thought the ideas behind Mechanical Animals kinda fit the concept. Plus I just love his costumes for that album.

Fair enough. I mean, I never saw Omega as a particularly prideful character, but he/she does look pretty cool.

True! I guess it was more the overall theme of the album (the hollowness of fame, vanity, feeling trapped in vices, etc.) that I was thinking of, rather than Omega specifically, but his/her design seemed to work really well for a fashion-obsessed character.

Well, I suppose. I mean, the vanity came in the form of Omega becoming confused by what had happened to him/her, and finally giving into Coma White, a sense of confusion and lack of identity, before Antichrist Superstar picks up and starts telling a new story. (In Universe, ACSS comes after Mechanical Animals because the Triptych is in reverse, beginning with Holywood)

Right! But I think the world Manson presents is pretty full of vanity and shallowness, not necessarily evident in Omega personally, but surrounding and enveloping him/her. I was going more for the feel and theme of the album as a whole, not necessarily Omega him-/herself. The Pride character's more just a stylistic reference based on similar themes, not any direct reference to the album's specific characters and content. Don't get me wrong--I'm not criticizing Manson in any way! Mechanical Animals is probably my favorite album of his.

Fair enough, I get where you're coming from, vanity and pride is a large part of the story, and hubris is really the start of Omega's downfall. I mean, my favourite Manson album is probably Born Villain, and my favourite concept album is Holy Wood, but my favourite album story is Mechanical Animals, because it was much more original, and fresher than anything he'd made up to that point. Also, who are the third and fourth sins supposed to be?

Hey, sorry for the delay! Had some cross-country travel and comic book conventions recently, which put me pretty behind here on dA!
Oh, really? I actually haven't listened to Born Villain yet, except for the You're So Vain cover. Sounds like it was pretty good! I didn't really care for the direction his albums were going after Eat Me, Drink Me, and I think High End of Low might be the last one I heard. I always loved his concept albums, though--works of art! I heard his new Say10/Heaven Upside Down album is supposed to be pretty political--might be interesting! I might have to start listening to his newer stuff again...
Oh, Wrath and Gluttony? I didn't really base them on anyone in particular, although Gluttony is probably subconsciously modeled after Pugsly from The Addams Family or the Corpse Child from Nightmare Before Christmas (who was probably himself based on Pugsly).

Oh yeah, Born Villain is rocking. It's like a mid-tempo pop-metal album, sitting somewhere between Eat Me, Drink Me and High End Of Low in a blender with a bit of Portrait Of An American Family. Yeah, his concept albums are some of his best work. I mean, I didn't quite get the story in Golden Age Of Grotesque, but it's one of my favourite albums at the moment.
Pretty excited for SAY10/Heaven Upside Down too, cause Manson hasn't really been at all political for a good twenty years, maybe more. But I would give Born Villain a good listen.

Hey, man! Sorry for the huge delay--this summer's already getting crazy busy!
But yeah, I'll have to check out Born Villain! I think I've only heard a couple tracks from it. I agree, though--his concept albums were amazing! I know Golden Age of Grotesque was kind of polarizing with his fans, but I really enjoy it! I'm not sure it has a completely cohesive story... I remember when it was released, he was being interviewed by Fuse and said that it was kind of his conception and interpretation of the feel and mood of the Roaring 20's through World War II, with a lot of references to art, iconography and fascism. Really interesting!
Yeah, we'll see what Heaven Upside Down is like! I think it's coming out soon, so we should be able to hear some singles before long.

Yeah essentially, but with some twists, and it's longer, and I think it's better. I guess the extra episodes helps build a deeper story in a way.

Wow, thanks so much! I really appreciate it! ^___^
This particular drawing style was heavily influenced by artists like Jhonen Vasquez and Roman Dirge, though I'd say my art overall has more influence from artists like Bengus (character designer for Capcom in the 90s), Tim Burton, The Batman Animated Series, anime, Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes), and pretty much any retro sci-fi/art deco stuff I could find. I'm sort of a mutt.

Ha, ha! Yeah, I like to use a-bro-viations ironically, which hopefully doesn't make me a hipster. I especially use them around our friend Dan, because he's such a broski wannabe that he's always annoyingly shortening every word he says. He said "perf" instead of "perforation". He must pay.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, but it's true! I AM old! Or, at least old enough to not relate to younger kids and their music/culture. I've passed the threshold, where the new stuff that comes out now makes me pine for the stuff that was around when I was younger, or at least for the stuff that was around 10 years ago. Suddenly I understand what all those old people were sputtering on about when I was a kid. I'm not bitter toward the current pop culture, I just don't relate to it.

YEAH I see people on Tumblr use "Perf" all the time and it makes me want to hurt things... /shudder
I hear ya. Remember when Orgy was at the top of their game? That was 15 goddamn years ago. Scary shit. Hell, even Rob Zombie doesn't make music anymore. I still like Lady Gaga and SOME of the new stuff intrigues me but all this mustache hipster nonesense really does seem dumb. xD Ah well.

MurderousAutomaton In reply to MalkavianFalconess [2013-09-09 07:36:46 +0000 UTC]
Ha, ha! Yeah. That's the power of abbreviating.
Ha! I know, right? Orgy's actually back now--Jay Gordon's still singing, but the rest of the band is pieced together from the leftovers of Deadsy. They sound pretty good, though! They've only released a single so far, Grime of the Century, but I'm hoping they'll release a new album soon.
Yeah, all the new hipster stuff is too minimalist and derivative of hip-hop and new wave. It's like Cold Play, but with backward baseball caps. That's the kind of stuff I just don't relate to, so I know I've crossed that generational threshold. It's fine--I'll always have my 80s cartoons, 90s windbreaker jackets and The Matrix.

O.O REALLY? Fuck, I am SO youtubing that in a moment. When they did the cover of Blue Monday I got sooo addicted, and I was only 10! XD
Lawl. I know the feeling. I kinda left pop culture when Fallout Boy came around, ya know? Emo crap. /shudder
Now you made me want to watch the Matrix again. Damn you, Tom! xD

MurderousAutomaton In reply to MalkavianFalconess [2013-09-11 17:48:07 +0000 UTC]
Totally! It's not a bad song! Though I still prefer their older stuff--seems like as bands get older, all their songs are about bitching about relationships. I liked it when Orgy criticized the fashion world and society in general. But yeah, Blue Monday was off of their first album, which came out like in 1998, I think. Crazy how time flies!
Yeah, I felt the same way when all that indie/emo/whatever music came out. But somehow that still felt like part of my generation--I just didn't care for it. It feels totally different with all this tween wave stuff: I feel much more disconnected from it, since it's the next generation's music. I'd always been part of the current generation--it's so weird to be old enough to have a generation after mine, with their own styles and tastes.
Ha! Matrix for the win! I wish the second and third movies had been as good as the first.
