Description
A new character for my 80s toy series, finally! This is 'Tater, the Rebellion's chief mechanic/engineer. His family was killed in the ensuing chaos of Brainy's rampage, so he joined up to help. Can you guess what toy he's based on? Shouldn't be too hard.

Ha, ha--thanks! He does look like a Metal Slug character! I was worried the boots looked kind of odd being blue, but I had to get as much reference in there for Mr. Potato Head as possible!

Thanks, mister! I'm trying to get back into these characters a bit--I'll be going to NY ComicCon in October, so I'd like to have a little write-up/character portfolio ready to take a long!

That's cool, man. I'm planning to head there in Oct. myself.
That'd be cool if we met up somehow.
I'm sure I'll bump into you eventually.

Oh, cool! Totally! I'm not sure which day(s) I'm going or what the plan is yet, but once I figure out my schedule I'll let you know when I'll be there!
What's blowing my mind is that I'm actually going as a member of the press, since I'm part of a podcast called "Sega Addicts". A writer for the podcast site is meeting up with me, too, so we're going to represent, big time!
I was super excited when they approved my press pass! I didn't think they would, since it's video game related. But anyway, I also plan on bringing my 80s story along, in case I get the chance to plug it! Couldn't hurt. Maybe I'll tackle Seth Green and force him to read it!
I don't even know if he'll be there, but I bet ToyFare will be, so I can at least talk to them about it, hopefully.

Sounds cool, man.
I've been looking up the lists for artists and Exhibitors for this convention.
I'll definitely try to find you if all works out.
That's cool you'll be able to bring your stuff, man.
I'm sure we'll keep bouncing back into the convention. lol
Have a good one man.

Sweet! Oh, yeah, are you doing a table for the convention? I forgot that you usually do that, right? I'll have to stop by and bother you!
Geez, I really need to get my ass on those 80s characters--I hope to get about four or five more done before the convention.
Take it easy, sir!

I don't have a table, I need to.
Lately I've been drawing new stuff.
I've heard stuff about getting a table in NYC was pretty strenuous.
Like getting a table in Maryland, Philly or Charlotte would be easier. I'm not sure, but right now I'm prepping to see what I need to fill out or send for portfolio reviews, before the convention comes up.
catch you later man.

Oh, really? Well, yeah, I guess it would be a bit of a pain to get a table at a show that big. Probably expensive, too, right?
You have to submit work before they approve you for a booth? That seems rough. Well, with limited space, I guess they have to work it out somehow.
Anyway, later!

Based purely on the name I'd go with Mr. Potato Head. He's got the stoutness to go along with it, but I also have a feeling that he gets beaten up a lot... y'know, always has someone looking to rearrange his face.

MurderousAutomaton In reply to Treyos [2010-09-11 18:19:48 +0000 UTC]
Ha, ha! Totally. I pictured him as sort of a fatherly figure among the Resistance. He also builds a large mining machine that resembles Pac-Man!

Thanks! I figured he's not literally Mr. Potato Head, but just a short, stubby guy with bad skin, so he got the nickname 'Tater. I think of these characters as more references to the originals, not necessarily the same characters. Does that make sense? Probably not.

KoniraThax In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-09-14 19:15:17 +0000 UTC]
Oh, god, where do I start? I do a lot of character refs for some of my characters. I've got too many to count.

MurderousAutomaton In reply to KoniraThax [2010-09-15 18:28:56 +0000 UTC]
Gotcha! Your characters have a very unique look, though--well done! I reference Capcom characters a lot in my art, particularly Street Fighter. Video Games are one of the biggest influences on my art, though that's probably not surprising!
π: 0 β©: 1
KoniraThax In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-09-15 18:30:32 +0000 UTC]
I think it's best to look at my influence meme to see what I use to ref a lot. I've been drawing a lot of old 70s rock stars lately, though so I use them as refs since they're, ya know real. XD
[link] <--- Easier of you look at this.
It'd be fun if you did one of those, I bet you'd have fun doing it. ^^

MurderousAutomaton In reply to KoniraThax [2010-09-19 01:30:41 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I saw a couple of those and I was thinking of doing one! I think it would be fun. ^_^
Yours is really cool! I love the "SCIENCE!" one! I feel like a noob because I don't recognize most of what's in there! Who is Chris Squire? I noticed that you draw him quite a bit. And who's Don Paulo? His work and his name seem so familiar...
π: 0 β©: 1
KoniraThax In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-09-19 01:39:13 +0000 UTC]
I'd love to see it!
Haha, thanks. XD
A lot of them are Eastern, I have a big anime/manga influence.
Chris Squire is the bassist of 70s prog-rock band Yes - Jon Anderson, the vocalist. They're still around, too. Chris is a real nice guy, he's gigantic - 6'3" - but just a real big nice guy. He's also one of those bassists who defined the sound, his skill is amazing.
Don Paolo is the "main" villain from the Professor Layton DS game.

MurderousAutomaton In reply to KoniraThax [2010-09-29 02:29:09 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, once things settle down a little I probably will do an influence map! I've already got ideas going...
Oh, cool! Yeah, I've got a large anime influence in my art, too, which I'm sure you've noticed. Bengus is one of my biggest influences--he did a lot of art for Capcom in the early 90s, mostly for Street Fighter and Darkstalkers. Amazing stuff! He's influenced a lot of Western artists.
Oh, okay--maybe I didn't recognize Don Paolo after all. He sure looked familiar; maybe I saw him in a video game magazine!

Cool! Can't wait!
I've noticed the styles in your art but I can't pin-point them - all the more reason to make an influence map.
π: 0 β©: 1
MurderousAutomaton In reply to KoniraThax [2010-09-30 17:19:25 +0000 UTC]
Definitely! Overall, I see my style as a bastard child of anime, western comics, Tim Burton and H.R. Giger. Less Giger now than it used to be, but still. ^_^

KoniraThax In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-09-30 17:26:02 +0000 UTC]
LOL, no problem with that. XD
I was a big style copier until I read The Edge Chronicles - and copied that style. But Chris Riddell's work is so AMAZING. He's made me the artist I am today, along with others.
