Looking back through this comic again, for some reason Ben's dad makes me think of Oak... and Brock. It might be the 'fox eyes' [Eyes Always Shut (TVTropes) ] and that particular style of grey hair.
Being related to Brock might honestly make some sense, considering some of Brock's... quirks.

Shiny Gardevoir!
One of my favorite Pokemon of all time, simply because of how OP it is (not to mention the fact that it is awesome looking [even if the game sprite has no boobies... er...])

I caught one on Platinum using the Poke Radar. Took like, 40+ hours to get that streak up to 50 Ralts.

No. That was just the ONE streak. I spent over 500 hours on that game JUST TO CATCH ONE... STUPID... SHINY.
However, B/W was much easier. I has a perfect stats Haxorus that was hatched, shiny, no hack, within a week of playing.
