Description
So . . . . I don't think I've ever mentioned how much I love the West End musical of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Or just flat out Charlie and the Chocolate factory the story. It was literally my first fandom allllll the way back in 2005. And I really enjoy the song "More of Him to Love" detailing the life of gluttonous German Augustus Gloop. ( Listen here www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZi3JE⦠) I just love the characterization of the Gloop family so they've been the subject of a lot of my doodles. My friend and I have been talking a lot about the Gloops and their butcher shop, hence the title. "Metzgerei" is the Southern German word for "Butcher Shop" as opposed to the Northern German word "Fleischerei". Huzzah for my 4-plus years of German coming in handy~
For some reason, they sort of remind us of the characters from "Bob's Burgers" in a . . . weird way. Mrs. Gloop (musical version) is kinda like Linda in her dotingness over her child(ren) and I can see Mr. Gloop a little like Bob, simple man just trying to own a business. But anyways, they're cute and I enjoy drawing for them.
I'll eventually draw the other kids of Charlie~

Aw, this is so cute and gross at the same time! (Those blood-spatters on Mr. Gloop's apron!)

That's what I was going for, actually. I was looking at the original costume sketches for the characters and noticed that the designer put a tinge of pink on Mr. Gloop's apron . . . then I just ran with it.Β

*hides* Yes, he's one of my favorites. Unpopular opinion, I know. I don't know why, but I've always had a soft spot for him. Veruca follows in a close second.

I usually don't like admitting that he's my favorite because most people are like "Eww, he's gross. Why do you like him?" I think in the musical, he's adorable and I love his German accent.

I think the 2005 movie is closer to what Dahl envisioned for the character, but the musical just makes him so cute that it's hard to think of him as the revolting child described in the book. He's much more of a sympathetic character, especially during the song of his demise.Β

I think it's actually pretty interesting what the musical does with him, making him not really mean, but just really greedy. And I think it's interesting how they show that Mrs. Gloop's brand of love has made him unable to do anything but eat. So their logic is, he'll be much more useful to the world as confectionery! It's super sadistic and nasty, but kind of appealingly so! And who knows, maybe he made it out fine...?

In all honestly, I didn't believe the original 1971 Augustus was very greedy or mean like the book. He was just kind of mellow and polite but it was just his love of chocolate that lead to his downfall. And the musical seems to go that same route except for the greed. But they also state in the lyrics that food was comfort and love to Mrs. Gloop, so it does make sense of why he eats the way he does. I was re-reading the original poem the other day and, although my argument was that they really didn't imply he was going to be made into fudge regardless like the new musical's "Auf Wiedersehen", a quick read-through did remind me that Dahl actually went that way, that Augustus would be better to the world as fudge. It's not as gruesome as "Auf Wiedersehen" though.
I alsoΒ find "Auf Wiedersehen, Augustus Gloop" an ironic title because "auf wiedersehen" literally translates as "until we see again". You'll see him again, alright!Β

There's just so much more emotion to him and his demise in the musical. I live in America so it might be a while before I see the musical, but when I do, I'm bringing the tissues for that scene. The love Mrs. Gloop has for her son is so genuine.Β

I really hope it comes to Broadway soon. I love Matilda and am dying to see that, but Charlie was my childhood. It was the first film I saw multiple times at the movie theater.

I totally ship Mike/Violet. Aww, at least Augustus has someone? When we went to the pool, we used to reenact Augustus' demise, complete with (semi) synchronized swimming Oompa Loompas.
That summer I drove my mom crazy with playing the soundtrack over and over again. She still can't listen to it to this day. XD

It is indeed amazing. Makes me remember a simpler time. The most ironic thing is that I used to be afriad of the old 1971 film as a younger child (for some reason, Violet's demise freaked me out and I could never get past it). But then I saw the 2005 film in the theatre and had no problem.

I think it might have been the dramatic music and the urgency behind the scene in the original. One of the final lines was Mr. Beaurgarde's "Explode?!?!", so I think that might have been it.

Technology keeps changing and so what was the woes of parents of their children watching too much TV, particularly Westerns in the 70's looks dated in the 2000's. The predominate concern for parents is children being on the computer and violent video games nowadays (as well as TV). So it seems like Mike will have be updated every once in a while when new tech comes along and captures the attention of our youth.Β

Speaking of mike, I go to school with this kid who looks and acts and mumbles exactly like the mike from the 2005 movie it's really kind of weird... But I'm okay with it. People tell me I look like the 2005 veruca or the old version violet... I then tell them no I look like me...
