I'm going to explain a little about this rejected AU. Warn that I didn't think everything so maybe there is something diffuse.
In principle it was a Swap Au (The same story but with the characters with different roles. Not Underswap base) But it was not pure, it had some difference to the original undertale main story.

One is that the skeletons live on the surface with humans. In the war, the leader of the skeletons betrayed all monsterkind, in reward humans left them free. However, he repented and threw himself into the mountain, falling into the core. (yep, he was Gaster)
Another has to do with souls to break the barrier. The red souls don't serve, their determination prevents their collection. In return there is a kind of monster soul strong enough to supply a lack of a human soul: skeleton souls.

Frisk was the first of the two humans to fall. Thanks to her soul, she saves from being sacrificed and flees to snowdin. There she survives thanks to the ghost that helps her, a kind of pale man who seeks redemption. She wears a long fringe that hides her red eye, which gives her power, although she only uses it if necessary.

Frisk already lived much better when Chara fell and was adopted by Frisk, treating her like a sister.
Chara is sweet, innocent and a fan of skeletons. One of her dreams is to meet one, before capturing them for Mettaton and being part of the royal guard.While Frisk making jokes with the lady of the ruins (Undyne), Chara usually trains with Mettaton and his neighbor, the young Asriel and his father sees them.
