Description Very common Mediterranean Gecko caught outside my apartment. They feed at artificial lights, which is interesting for the scientist in me.

I remember these when I visited Hawaii.
They were the easiest to find at night in our hotel, because of the lights Very smart of them!

Geckos are very neat! This species is not native to the US, but they're everywhere in Texas.

[link] I do believe this is the species we have down here.

Awesome photo

Thankies.

Geckos are great. I wish we had more of them, but winters in this part of Texas are *just* cold enough to keep them away.

Then again, I should look under more rocks for herps. I'll get plenty of chance for that w/ the research group I'm in now. Most of us are herpetologists to some degree

I really don't need to look that hard. Lizards are all over the place down here, geckos are a lot rarer though. But They usually can be seen around the outside of the house at night.

Rarer still, at least in this area of the island, are or exclusive species.

Always nice to have some lizards around. Do you know what's endemic to your location?

For the most part, yes

lol, I was sort of asking what they are

[link] Only this as far as I know.

If I'm thinking right and endemic means it lives exclusively in one area

That's what it means, yep

I've never been that far southeast. If I do make it, I'll keep my eyes peeled.

What do you mean?

They live only in Antigua

mustardofdoom In reply to NotXRAY0128 [2011-10-26 03:59:00 +0000 UTC]

From where I live, Antigua is South by Southeast. As a herpetologist, I never know where I'll be looking for critters.

Cute little thing... looks terrified though... do they have both sticky pads and claws..?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mustardofdoom In reply to Not-Think [2010-06-13 15:29:30 +0000 UTC]

It looks that way. Lots of van der Vaals forces + claws. I've never seen them crawling along the ground, now that I think about it - only on walls and more often on ceilings and the underside of overhangs.

Aww, so cute! Do they eat the bugs attracted to the lights?

mustardofdoom In reply to meihua [2010-06-09 04:20:40 +0000 UTC]

I've never seen a successful bite, but they do try. I bet if I watched them long enough, I would see that.

I've talked a little bit about this topic on my blog if you'd like to read about it : [link]

It's current science at its best. I might be a little biased, considering that I'm preparing to publish a paper a related topic
