location: Gion District, Kyoto, Japan

reason: one month abroad to study japanese. kyoto has to be one of my favorite places in japan, so rich in culture and history.
Also known as Geisha street because of the kabuki theater and the geisha houses lining the street that are hidden away by tall fence walls and cloth gates. It's mysterious in the way they exist in plain sight but still hold their secrets close.
I learn that restaurants needed a special license to accommodate geisha. They'll hang small plates of the names of the geisha houses they serve by their doorways.
It's also very rare to see a geisha in public by night and even rarer by day. I able to caught a glimpse of a maiko (geisha in training) exiting a cab before being whisked into a geisha house two seconds later. They are the more colorful of their profession, all metallics and bold hues; their clothes are stunning to look at. Unfortunately I was unable to take a picture of her, but that would have unraveled to mystery anyway.
