Description After a rubbish weekend of things F***ing up (Alien And then a Troll) I have decided to finish off stuff that has been kicking around for ages.
So here is a Werewolf that i have been tinkering with, needs
texturing yet and more animations added.

Oh yeah, only one more thing: Where is its tail??

I left the tail out because, they are a pain to rig and then animate with... Just being lazy really.

Hi! I really enjoyed watching this animation, as it's kind of how I feel a werewolf would walk. If you ever do one running, I'd be especially intrigued in that, as I think it would be very difficult to conceive of how the limbs move in rapid succession.

wow that is awesome! ;u; I've been taught Maya this year (just finished 1st year of animation) and I have no idea how to model something so awesome D: the only things that I can model are mostly square (recently it's been books and pencils) since I'm only comfortable with using the polygon tool :I

So you wanting to be a animator in the future??

No problem, and yes I would like to be an animator in the future, but I have a feeling that it will be in 2D rather than 3D, then again I haven't practised much on Maya and I have 2 more years at uni ^.^

Whether its 2d or 3d as long as you enjoy it that's the main thing.
What course are you doing at Uni? Are you liking it?

My course is just called Animation (I think its like BA Animation(Hons)to be specific), and yes I like the course, our teachers are really nice, just overall I enjoy learning these two different animation techniques.

Did you use 3ds max to make this?

muttleymark In reply to cryingunderwater [2012-06-09 06:57:44 +0000 UTC]

Hi there. No. I use Maya for modelling, rigging and animation.
Why do use 3dsmax?

cryingunderwater In reply to muttleymark [2012-06-09 10:37:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh cool I go to university and that's what we've been learning to use. Will be learning maya next year

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

muttleymark In reply to cryingunderwater [2012-06-09 11:18:33 +0000 UTC]

I see so they teach you Both Packages. Usually its only one because they are so in depth and take years to master. I use Maya because it was made for artists and is fab for animating, were as 3ds(clunk)is the spawn of CAD is now old hat and bloated beyond any recognition, from when I last used it??

So what are you studying at University? Just curious.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cryingunderwater In reply to muttleymark [2012-06-09 12:58:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh okay. Yeah, I think we go into Maya in more depth and not so much 3ds max. I'm studying Media Design. You work in gaming and animation? What did you study, may I ask?

Also I'm starting my creative coding paper next trimester, a little nervous. I'm guessing you're a pro with coding?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

muttleymark In reply to cryingunderwater [2012-06-09 13:08:14 +0000 UTC]

I studied Natural history Illustration but turned to digital media rather than traditional paint.
My main work is modelling texturing rigging and then animating 3d characters, that go into our gaming system.

I am hopeless at any form of code I only have a artistic eye..
All that code stuff is too much like the Matrix for me.

cryingunderwater In reply to muttleymark [2012-06-09 13:12:48 +0000 UTC]

Haha yeah I'm pretty nervous about coding.

Your degree and job sounds awesome.

Sorry to be a bother, but may I ask how you got into your career? Did you make contacts or build your way up in the industry? Or did your degree alone get you the job? Just a little curious as to how well people do with this type of degree.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

muttleymark In reply to cryingunderwater [2012-06-09 15:24:16 +0000 UTC]

Its no bother.
University is the best place to learn any software or Animation?
but you will have work at it, live it, breath it. Be a nerd, so what!
But I suppose with me it was right place right time, I started a 2d digital Artist and climbed up to the lead 3d Character artist.
But I had to fight for it, I still do with the post grads which I have to mentor.
They are brainwashed into thinking they are Fantastic.
They will be fantastic after five years of working pro.

What is your degree and what does it entail?? What sort of job do you want when you graduate.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cryingunderwater In reply to muttleymark [2012-06-10 02:39:45 +0000 UTC]

Wow, really great to hear stuff like this thanks. I kept being told at University that if it's what I want I do have to live it and breath it. I don't mind being a nerd though.

My degree is based around 3d modelling and animation, coding, gaming, film, special effects and wearable technology. All depends on what papers I take in the feature also. In my third year I can take a paper where I have to design and develop my own, working 2d game. Starts with concept, alpha, beta and final product ect.

I don't have a specific job in mind at this point, but I think I would love where ever it leads to. Whether it be gaming, film, animation ect.

I live in New Zealand and almost everyone in design here says they want to work for Weta (where the made Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Tintin.) I would really like to go overseas though. Are there many opportunities in the UK?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

muttleymark In reply to cryingunderwater [2012-06-10 07:51:42 +0000 UTC]

Hiya.
I think Weta get several thousand CV's a month.Hahah.
The opportunities here in The UK are varied, It just depends on what kind of work you want to do? The film industry treats you better than most!!
A friend of mine has spent most his time in films.. Such As Avatar, Rango and many others, but he has have to move home to were the work was. So there a good times and then lean times as its not regular employment.( He now works in Canada)

I would not even entertain the games industry as a vast amount have closed down and with the ones who remain they treat you like crap and make you work 90 hour weeks for seven days. The up side is lots of money.
Even the big companies like EA our horrid to work for because it is a employers market, you are so easy to replace especially post grads which soon burn out.
But don't get me wrong its not all bad, there are some smaller companies that are really good to work for, they just need Checking out. Facebook Games or getting more popular.

I have made all sound really black, haven't I? Bugger I didn't mean to!

Anyway if you have any problems with anything 3d related i will be happy to help you out!
Laters.

Hey, thanks so much for this. It's really good to know. I know that it's kind of a difficult industry to get into sometimes, but then all employment is struggling at the moment.

I think film would be awesome to work in. Maybe by the time I've finished my degree there will be more jobs in the gaming industry, seeing as that's where technology is leading to now.

Thanks so much for your help! Just curious.. If it's not too rude for me to ask, how old you are and how long you've been in the industry for?

Cheers

As a student studying animation myself I feel for ya...I love sculpting and animating a character; but I hate rigging and skinning, and I absolutely loathe retopology. -_-;

But this is some great animation of limb-movement, did you use 3Dsmax or Motionbuilder to animate it, or did you use motion-capture?

Oh yeah. Whoops. I really need to pay more attention in lectures (tutors told us about maya when giving a talk on animating).

But it's still not available at my university regardless, students can download it for home, but we've not had any classes on how to use it like we have with all of the other software at university.

How long before you graduate?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Farumir In reply to muttleymark [2012-06-05 15:03:57 +0000 UTC]

No mudbox, just z-brush. I really love working with z-brush, it's my favorite software; but 3Dsmax has given me the most trouble and has been ever since I first started the course.

I'm in my second year but I'm taking a year out to find work-placement, so I won't be back to finish my final year until 2013.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

muttleymark In reply to Farumir [2012-06-05 17:46:13 +0000 UTC]

I love Zbrush even if its quirky, Its more forgiving with the way it handles meshes than its rivals. As mudbox can be utter cow at times. ( check out my predator head sculpt) that was all mudbox. I have some grey hairs after that I can tell you!!

The trouble with 3dsmax is now so bloated, and the way it does stuff is archaic if you want a easier modeller then try something else? Tho your tutors will tell you different.!!
Do you just use zbrush in your course work..? to learn summat well enough you have to hammer it big time and uni is the perfect place to do that. So anything not uni themed in your portfolio will help you in the long run..

So what kind of job are you after when you leave Uni? Generalist or modeller??

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Farumir In reply to muttleymark [2012-06-06 23:20:43 +0000 UTC]

The latest z-brush has a fur and hair and grass tool too which I'm eager to use.

Oh tell me about it, even my tutors tell me 3Dsmax is not as good as some other program they keep talking about (I think it's called Houdini or something) yet despite how much they brag about this better software uni never invests to get it.

Yep, we use z-brush, 3Dsmax, Final cut pro, Adobe premiere and After effects, Apple-motion, motion-builder and motion-capture. I have my first z-brush character in my gallery [link] which needs furring and coloring/texturing but the retopology on this is murder, for the course it had to be no more than 5000 triangles but as always 3Dsmax kept crashing and losing my files or not opening them at all every now and again, and I never did finish retopologing the teeth before handing it in despite getting extensions, our z-brush tutor was really useless at making briefs and tutorials.

Honestly I don't know what I want to be. I like designing and modelling characters so I'd like a job that specializes in those areas. I'm taking a year out so that I'm not as stressed as well as look for a place to work in.

I take it you're in the UK (I've only ever heard a brit say 'summat' and 'uni' lol). In which university did you (or are you) study? I'm in Leeds Metropolitan uni.

Hey up Chuck!
Yes I am in the UK, I live and work in Manchester, where I create and animate 3d characters for our video game system .
When I went to Uni, I did a degree course in illustration at Blackpool, But I wanted to do digital stuff instead of the more traditional media. As the tutors could not use the 3d software to its full extent.. I had to learn it by myself and from friends!!! ( Lightwave.)
Your first Zbrush character you say? This was mine..
[link]

Have made this from Z spheres? ... Don’t mean to sound rude here, But is he completely finished.???
Okay , he looks good. But it could be fekkin Ace.. with a bit more tweeking and general point in the right direction.
I take it that he is going to be animated, A tough choice especially a character with dog leg..
That will be some messing about in Lotionbuilder.. If you plan to use mocap.?
Just out of curiosity what is the course you are doing??
Mind you, you will be finishing soon from uni..

You need to Zbrush stuff during yer summer hols and the year out.. Just bits of yer own stuff loads of tutorials.. Now lets see, a pint lager or Zbrush... I would do both.. and still do?

But in the long run having some after effects or premier skills under yer belt is not a bad thing either?

THAT'S your first work?! My jealousy meter just went through the roof.

No he's not finished. I never got the chance to texture him and give him fur before the final hand-in so I'm having to do it during the holidays so that he's ready to use in my own independant werewolf movie (I really like to do costuming/props/prosthetics/puppetry special effects too). For that I'm not sure which method to animate the werehyena in yet.

I used final cut pro and adobe stuff to make this: [link] not my best work but it was all I could do by myself since I didn't have a group (other students left me out...) I had to get outside help to lend a hand with the acting and other minor things.

Thanks. And you would help me really? Thank you so much! At the moment I'm putting the bultungin on hold until I finish the main course: the werewolf. I'm making a full suit [link] first, then I'm making a 'digital double' for it, because I'm attempting the old-school horror movie style; where it's costumes and prosthetics and props for the physical contact with the actors, and CGI for the jumping around and gore and fighting etc.

Soon as the costume's complete and the script's fully written, I'll be putting up flyers to say that I'll be doing auditions for actors and other jobs such as music and assisting with animating and camera work etc.
