Description THIS WORK HAS BEEN UPDATED:

Ages ago before I started actually doing MLP artwork, My friend Amanda was drawing pony versions of Sherlock and John. I loved them. Part of the reason I even actually started trying to improve. This was the design for Sherlock, including the violin cutie mark. I think one of these days I might try to make a crossover fic of them, just for giggles.

My friend Amanda is still the original designer of pony-John and pony-Sherlock, and she approves of these. <3

Hello there Dragon, my name is Thorn. I have been on the lookout for ponies wearing trench coats, and surprisingly, this is one of the few things I could find. I don't want a commission or anything, but I would appreciate if you could share any tips with me. Thanks!

Well, as far as clothing on ponies go, I do end up going to look up references of that particular article of clothing that I am intending on attempting to draw. Then, it is a mental game of deciding exactly how said article of clothing is going to fit on a pony. Then you have to figure, maybe specifics of this article of clothing basically wouldn't show up at all in pony society. (Like, I doubt an earth pony is going to own a coat that has buckles or something to that effect. Unicorn? That'd be fine, but a Pegasus or Earth pony would think that having to buckle things, or even tie laces, would be a pain in the hind end.) If your using a layering program, its a good idea to draw your pony first, and your clothing on two separate layers. Its nice to have the outline of your pony already done long before you start drawing clothes on them. Thats how I go about it!

Wow, thanks for such a quick response. Yeah, I figured that I would have to guess for proportions, but I never even considered that buckles might not even exist sometimes. Thanks a million, I think I'll have to follow you in order to...erm...observe this technique. Thanks a million!

Thank you. Oh! I should also mention that as far as I have been able to tell, ponies are very very...curvy. lol. So the way that clothes would "hang" off of them, would more than likely be far different than how you think they would normally hang. Specially with this picture, which is why I attempted to put a bit of an indent around his hips, where the long coat hangs off of him.

No problem. I'll keep all this in mind, and I look forward to learning more. Maybe someday I'll even get good at this!
