Thank you for the C&C! Actually I randomly made mountains until I thought they fit the continents, instead of completely inverting the topology. I will make a new, larger and more "realistic" map whenever I get the time and trust me I'll try and take all the advice I've been given on here and elsewhere.

To take something that is already beautiful, and then add your own personal touch to make it even more breathtaking is very close to impossible.
But what you have done here isn't just that. What you have done is taken what exists and made it yours. Imagination and possible realism existing side by side.
Great use of the source materials, and with an excellent experimental knowledge of PS CS5, you have allowed us to cross boundaries with your simple, yet layered artwork of your controlled imagination. If there is ever another creation cycle, I wouldn't be worried, God has you in his corner. And just maybe you were there when He created Earth the first time.

I've been thinking about this concept for a long while and every time i see a map like this i think that if the artist is using the same mass of water as exists on out earth, then the water level in the inverted world would be far higher, flooding the peninsula between the english and the scandinavian seas for a start. I've been looking for software that would allow me to model this but am finding nothing... And i know this is 3 years old, but i thought you might have some suggestions.

I'd totally live on Lake Supe-... Superior Island? The biggest of the Great La-... Islands, since I actually live by Lake Superior IRL.

Your North pole is accurate, but Antarctica is a chain of hundreds of large & small land masses. I saw your art on IO9. It's beautiful.

I think a city between the Cuban and Haitian Lakes south of the Atlantic mountains would have the greatest scenery

This map may be mildly amusing to normal people, and itβs kind of fun, butβ¦to the geoscientist, itβs a nightmare!
How would the climate of the earth be changed if instead of 70% of the globe being a heat sink, only 30% was water? What would currents in these mini-oceans be like: could there be a mini-Gulf stream in the Greenland Ocean that could warm the lands around it? Without El Nino or La Nina, would we be worse off or better off β fish, after all, should do well with the El Nino not reducing upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich waters, and the birds that eat them, and the bird poop that creates fertilizers for the natural world as well as agriculture. The climate would be more βstableβ β but does an even, non-fluctuating climate mean better?
And plate tectonics, oh my! The world reversed looks like a planet approaching tectonic extinction. Fewer oceanic areas means less oceanic lithosphere forming, meaning fewer functioning hot spots, meaning less heat coming from the mantle and core of the earth, meaning the earth is cooling, meaning that the entire planetary system might be shutting down, meaning weβll lose our magnetic field and be ionized to death by deadly radiation from spaceβ¦ What happens when this happens? Well, it did happen to a very fine planet that apparently once had water and an atmosphere: Mars.
So, what looks like just a rather funny βsee what the world would look like if reversedβ image is nothing I want to think about at 3AM. It does, however, provide a really great starting point for a discussion on the basic concepts of planetary geology and climatology. What would you expect to happen in such a reversal? This map should be on the final exam for first year students with the question: explain the plate tectonics and climate of this planet. And see what they come up with.

This is brilliant. I love the concept of taking the traditional global map and altering in a way that makes it completely different yet still very recognisable. Of course, I lack the skills to do something like this myself.
Did you literally just invert the altitude scale, or is there a bit more creative license involved?
It makes me really wonder about the societies and ecosystems of the world you have created. As such, I couldn't really say where I'd want to live - the world is too alien to me.

I'm in awe. It's beautiful, and I can't work out how you managed to do it in CS5. Layering yes, but content-aware fill? Clone stamp? The only suggestion I might make is that for the night-time image, perhaps spread the cities out more widely on the landmasses, rather than just around the edges of the oceans. This isn't a criticism in any shape or form, though. It's an incredibly well-crafted image, as is the daytime one.

(Have to say, though, a world like this would have A LOT more desert.)

This is very good, looks realistic with the mountains and the lights where big cities should be.
The only thing wrong I can find with the picture is that Antartica, which is land, was made as land here as well, or at least it gives that impression.

This is incredible.
When I was in 4th grade, I actually thought of how Earth could look reversed. It looks awesome.
The sad part is that the water supply would be even more limited.
Thank you!

Hello from Reddit~
Gotta say, this is the most thought-provoking photomanipulation I've seen. Is there any way you could also upload the flipped version for ease of viewing? Right now it's so hard to unsee the continents haha.
Instant fave. Well done.
