It was not particularly warm that morning, and a wet fog had persisted to cling to the ground for the last few hours. The damp air gave Sura a chill, as she looked towards the densely clouded sky and wondered if the sun would be able to shine through at any point today. She was grateful she had chosen to wear her heavy jacket, even though there had been no new snowfall overnight, and she nestled her face into the furry lining of her hood. With her fingers tucked safely into her warm mittens, she reached down and patted Tapeesa, the pale grey Tokota with a soft curly mane upon whom she was riding.

Just off to the side, her comrades Anyu and Sesi were mounted on two other large and curly-maned Tokotas – Takoda, a stunning brown Tokota with greying and distinctive markings, and Suka, a tawny fellow with a white mane and bit of a playful personality. Together, this trio travelled on a very special hunt – something the elders of the tribal council referred to as the Rite of the Hunt. Each of the Tokotas would be tested today, on their skill in locating and capturing a specified prey – the wily red foxes native to this part of the Tundra.

Suka, Tapeesa and Tokoda could feel the excitement in the air, from their human riders, and travelled forward at a brisk and lively pace. Their giant paw pads moving over frozen earth and soft snow drifts with ease while their attentive eyes and inquisitive ears stayed alert for the slightest sound or movement. Tapeesa lifter her nose ever so slightly, and Sura knew that she was sampling the air for possible scents of prey.

“I think they’ve got something,” Sesi whispered.

Sura looked over at the other two Tokotas, who were also sniffing the air. And then, whether they could hear a sound too faint for human ears or smell something only their noses were attuned towards, all three of them leapt forward and began a maddening race…
