Description
HI IM EIGHT MONTHS LATE BUT HEY IVE BEEN BUSYap classes. summer homework. lifeguarding. traveling. volunteering. :/ really wish i had more time to myself because i miss drawing. it's also probably the reason why there isn't much improvement this time around. I think I've stepped up my linework game though. On the other hand coloring looks like it's gone down in quality compared to last year. Style has stayed relatively the same.
yes she has antlers despite being female. no she wasn't born with them. yes theres an explanation why she has them
i finally gave sage a redesign because good god ive seriously come to loathe it? but i never really wanted to because that would make all of the commissions i've gotten of her in the past irrelevent...but the huge color palette, the childish hair, the obscene amount of flowers, and the ribbons were ridiculous.
so i started working on a redesign that took four months because i never had time and was never happy with each variation until now. definitely not the first time this has happened (*COUGH*SAFFRON*COUGH*). if sage was human she'd be greek/scandinavian (hell i was aiming for a greek toga look back then) so i took inspiration from the traditional outfits. Then that led me down a path that eventually evolved into something thats doesn't resemble the original source of inspiration anymore. oh well.
and since astri is a rabbit now i didn't really want two bun buns with similar physical features, so she's now a jackalope. animals are welcome to sit on her antlers. gifts of flowers, vines, hell even thorns are welcome really i just wanted an excuse for flower antlers and other cool shit. the new species also lets me work on a new story for her, since ive hated how bland she is. word of advice to character creators, never design a character before coming up with a story for them unless if they're meant for the background...
im considering changing her name too. sage seems too simple for a mythical creature. still iffy on the colors and the vine around her ankle. got rid of the tessen and gave that to my aerokinetic because that just makes more sense.

character and art belongs to me.
ive had this need to rework faix for a long while now but out of all of my characters he's gotten the most art done of him and i'd feel bad
we'll see what happens

This is the first time I've seen a jackalope character in the fandom, and she's SO cute!! I love her clothes, her lop ears, the antlers look wonderful regardless, and the colour scheme is so pleasing.

I don't have any idea what you're talking about your art looks amazing
Well I mean...I don't know what it was like last time but I still stand by that statement
But yeah wow...all her older designs are cute but I would say this is really good! I love her colour palette so much ;u;
Also had no idea how busy you were geez louise
Sorry to hear about all that.
Admittedly the way I design characters is completely random. Some of them start off as sort of derivatives of existing characters and then transform into entirely new things, others just happen because I thought of or drew a cute design, and then I build off of that sort of like 'Okay well...what would someone like this do?' or something like that.
Works for me but I see what you mean. It can be troublesome for a lot of people. I sort of avoid planning for some reason

I'd have to disagree with the "never design a character before coming up with a story for them" bit. It can work both ways, just that like any other creative skill, it varies from person to person. I've done the "design first, story later" path as many times as "story first, design later" path. You can do it, just probably with a bit of practice, you know?
Jackalopes for the win!! Glad to see another one around, haha~
In regards to Sage here, you've really emphasised on the colour brown for this redesign, and if you aimed to make her feel as if she is one with nature, then the brown does the job very well for her. c: No need to worry about staying "true" to the original design of your source of inspiration. The main point should be designing something that catches your fancy without killing your motivation to redraw her in the same attire.
Name-wise, the name "Sage" does have a mythical attribute to it. Aside from the nice herbal plant that's often used in cooking, it also refers to an individual who is wise and experienced in their ways, something like a chief's advisor. As always, only you can decide what name she will be rocking, so roll with it!

perhaps it may work for you ahaha, in which case, that's good to hear! i can definitely see where you're coming from. its just a struggle for me since ive yet to create a character that ive liked starting with design, mostly because if i start with design my end goal is to make the character look good, and then i dont have much to work with character wise. like with sage here, all i was able to come up with was "she likes plants but she used to kill whatever she tried to grow. then a magician gave her the power to manipulate plants. she thought she could give up her family's stuff to pay for the spell but she couldnt control her abilities to use to make the money back and they disowned her. now shes in a forest and protects it while people accidentally mistake her for a monster defending its territory." and for personality she was "naive, inattentive, and over the top sentimental and protective." she's extremely two dimensional and it...bothers me, but its hard to find more things to work with when she comes from an isolated space.
i have a few more characters with the same issue. like one of them is literally a teen in school that likes music and dance. he is super arrogant and has the ability to manipulate sound. and that's it. .____.
yes! you have a jackalope yourself? o:
of course lol. i just wanted to explain where i've gotten her designs from though im surprised that someone actually read the description
...never thought of it like that, whoops (ive only thought of the plant this whole time). that actually gives me a few more ideas for her rewrite, thanks a bunch!

Yeah, characters who live in isolation from society are a tough nut to crack. Still, it means that you can explore what it's like to be living all on your own, surrounded by so many plantlife and wildlife. Her backstory can also aid in fleshing her character out, since I see her as a "selfish" person as well. It takes time to make a character feel alive, so try to imagine how would she behave if you interacted with her. :'D Or anyone else that you plan on fleshing out, like that character you mentioned.
And yes! I actually have two Jackalope characters. XD
And you're most welcome! c:
