Glad you posted something like this. As I read through countless stories I often find the ones that left the most impact on me were the ones with a character that I could relate to and understand their motivation. I like how you keep pointing out "why" because as an author myself I try to keep track of my characters and spend a lot of time brainstorming them answering that very question. "why is she or he here and what value do they bring to the table and the world I've built" is a common thing that I think most authors could stand to think about myself included >.<

There's definitely nothing wrong with simplicity in stories as long as its quick, but yeah, the story won't really stand out that much to people if that's all there is. Even simple characterizations and logic can help something become more than just "another expansion story".

Decided to step out from semi-retirement and fave this.
It's good advice. I was always rubbish at writing, and was one of the worst offenders of writing dumb BE stories. Appreciate the tips.
I had always just ignored realism, assuming that since I'm writing bad BE fiction anyway none of my readers care about it -- but in hindsight, the people who wrote good BE stories were at least internally consistent, and the characters were plausible within their own little universe.
Thanks. If I ever return to writing, I'll try to remember this.

Just remember that we all start somewhere. Learning and growing beyond it is the most important part of any creative process. I definitely went through a similar experience, but I kept at it and practiced and wrote through it. Anyone can manage it if they want it enough.

It can be simple or complex depending on the situation, but regardless, its always there

Thank you so much for posting this important topic and explaining it. You were spot on with the problems so many stories have and I completely agree with everything you said. Nothing makes me stop reading a story faster than the feeling I get that it's not realistic and characters are not believable. Or that their actions have no logical reasons behind them.
I try to implement these principles in my writing as well and I'll take your tips into account. I hope other writers would too, because they upgrade a story to another level.

I'm happy I'm not the only one that feels this way about realism! Gives me confidence we'll see more quality stories like we have now in the future.

Thanks for the mention! Your stories really helped inspire me, so I'm not surprised my pacing matched your tastes. I have to say I generally enjoy a well-constructed story myself, as half the experience for me is seeing how a character reacts to expansion. And how are you supposed to know how they'll react if you don't know some of their personality? Flat characters can make for dull stories.
It may be a strange preference, but to me the stories are the best part about this fetish

I'm really happy to see stories like yours coming back into the scene lately, so I couldn't help but throw out a mention, haha! Its weird tho, how things go in this circle when you've been doing this long enough. Cuz its like, I found writers who inspired me to write one way, then I inspire others down the line, then they inspire me again, and its just this whole cycle. I've only ever experienced that through dA and it is really fascinating to see!
And that's not strange at all! People will prefer what they will, and they'll develop one way or the other, but some forget that these are expansion STORIES. Its one thing to just make a TMC clip and throw it out there, or to make a comic that's four panels where nothing changes but the character's boob size, but its so much more interesting when there's character and expressions and personality within it! That's what keeps an audience coming back!
