I had to search to see if anyone else came up with this theory before I wrote a giant thesis on it. Since WiR first came out and I saw Vanellope, I had a hunch one of the character designers has been showing us the growth of their daughter.
Despicable Me 2 Semi-spoiler:
Gru tells Agnes, "Never grow up." I think this hints that the daughter's come quite a ways in the year since Vanellope was put into play, and they're starting to really put their feelings toward their daughter in the writing.
