Can't find any of those sketches I had for my next commission, darn it. So here's a quickie to tide you all over.

Drew this up awhile ago, and thought I'd color it. I don't care what the critics say, I LIKED this movie. It was cute. And guess what? It actually got me interested in the Astro Boy franchise! I've never cared about it before. But now its actually catching my attention. Maybe I'll poke through the animes. Problem is, I like the movie's art style; I never much liked how Astro looked in the other versions. But since there are a lot of rabid Astro purists out there, I won't dare say for sure that the movie look is better; it just happens to be my favorite style for the franchise. Which is sad, cause this will probably be the only edition, as it didn't do too well in box office. Sadness...

...And I want Imagi, the studio behind this, to do a sequel also for their TMNT. COME ON, stop doing such COOL renditions of old stories and then not having any more...you're driving me crazy, gah....

Anyways, here are my three favorite characters from the movie. Astro cause he's just such a cute little robot, and I love his pure-hearted personality. And his voice actor, Freddie Highmore, is like the best child actor I've seen in ages; he never looks/sounds like he's acting, he's too real for that. And Zog, cause he had THE most winning moment/line in the whole movie ("I'm Old School"). Plus, he's voiced by Samuel L. Jackson, who is made of win. And Cora...uh, actually, I don't know WHY I like Cora, come to think of it, lol. She doesn't really DO anything, her backstory is NEVER explained...I dunno, maybe I just saw the potential for her character and kind of wrote that into her in my mind. It kinda cracked me up that the trailer indicated more between her and Astro than the actually movie did, lol. Fishing for shippers much?

I'll probably do a review for this movie in my journal when the movie comes out on DVD. Mainly cause I feel like I have to explain why I liked this movie, and cause I want to debunk some professional critics. But if I was a die-hard old school Astro fan...I dunno really what I'd think of this movie; it kind of changes some things sort of.

Anyways, I tried to stick with the movie art, but dang...imitating 3D computer animation with 2D cell art is kinda difficult, lol. Naturally, a lot of texture and color shading was lost. Although part of that was cause this was just supposed to be a quickie art anyways.
Also, I'm really not happy with how Cora came out. She looked OK in the sketch, but lost something in inking, and lost more when it was live-traced in Illustrator. But she's still recognizable as her character, which is good cause she had an awesome character design. Each of her bajillion shirts had their own texture/pattern though, and I just kinda simplified them with a few photoshop brushes cause again, it was supposed to be a quickie.
Astro was fun. He was easy. He was hard to get JUST RIGHT, but for the most part he was pretty easy. Most difficult thing were the eyes.
Zog...uh, shading metal is hard. XD

This scene was kind of a throwback to that scene in the movie where the kids are all cleaning/buffing/painting up Zog to be battle-ready. So Cora's got the buffing rag and Astro's putting finishing touches on the paint job. Zog is just chillin'.
Background is just random clouds and blue sky, cause it was a clear day as they were working and again...quickie art. ^_~

Astro Boy is trademarked to Ozamu Tezuka, Tezuka Productions, Imagi Studios, Summit Entertainment, and the Japanese city of Niiza (which has him registered as a resident, how cool is that)

.....I think Astro and Cora aged a few years in my art.....>_> I need to learn how to draw kids and preteens a little better, although technically the movie does have at least Toby at age 13, which I guess is how old Astro should look in human years...uh whatever.
