His head is lowered, but you take his hand in yours and try to pull him away from Uvo’s grave. He seems to refuse, but does not speak. Instead, his feet stay in place and his muscles do not move.
It pains you to see him like this, so you try to coax him to leave. “Let’s get you to the hotel, Kurapika. You need to bathe and rest.”
Your voice seems to release him from the trance, and he turns. As he does, his hand falls out of yours, but you do not reach for him again.
He is silent on the way back as well, and nor does he protest when you prompt him to undress so that he may take a bath and wash away the blood from his hair, face, and hands. Although his eyes are hidden by the black contacts, you can tell that the life has faded and has been replaced by the emptiness of murder and revenge.
The scarlet of the blood combines with the water, turning it a gentle pink, so you drain the tub and fill it again, this time adding soap so that small bubbles form on the surface of the water.
Kurapika scrubs his nails intently, picking out the dirty and coagulated blood. His arms are heavy and weak, so you roll up your sleeves and carefully rinse his blonde hair. The golden locks turn dark brown with the water, curling over his forehead until you pull it back gently.
“Do you want to take that off for a bit? Until after the bath?” you ask, tapping a finger against the chains on his right hand.
For a moment, you’re scared that he can’t hear you. That he’s trapped in his own mind, going insane at the notion that he’s killed someone. Threatening to kill is different than following through with it.
But you take a breath when he shakes his hand and the conjured bracelet disappears.
You leave to allow Kurapika to dress, but when you enter the bathroom again, he’s fully prepared to return to his position as bodyguard.
“You are not going there now. I can call Melody or someone else and tell them that you need rest. They will understand even now.”
“I don’t need rest,” he argues, taking a step towards you – towards the door.
Not wanting to continue this, you raise your hand and press your finger to the center of his forehead, causing him to collapse. You catch him before he hits the ground and take him to bed. Without your powers, you would not have been able to put him to sleep immediately.
As soon as he’s in bed, you remove the blue cover and his shoes, throwing them over the chair in the corner of the room. Then, you call Melody and tell her that Kurapika will return in the morning. You offer to take his place, but she declines, saying that everything is under control.
You turn the lights out and crawl into bed with Kurapika. As your arms wrap around him, you pull him into your chest. His heart beats steadily against yours, and his shallow breathing comforts you. He will occasionally shiver or groan, as if he were having a nightmare.
You press your forehead against his, blowing a gentle breeze on him. The soft whines fade, and for a moment, you think you see him smile. Hopefully the dreams you’ve given him will last until morning. Until then... you put his arm over you and tangle your legs with yours.
“I won’t let this consume you…” you whisper, running your fingers through his damp hair.
