Description
So technically these ladies are not goddesses, but Titanesses, the daughters of Uranus and Gaia. Either way, they are immortal and many are prominent figures in the myths, so I decided to include them as well.
Rhea: The Titaness of fertility and known as the "Mother of the Gods," Rhea was the wife and queen of Cronus, the King of the Titans. Due to a prophecy that stated that Cronus would be deposed of by his children, each child Rhea gave birth to was promptly swallowed by Cronus. When Rhea gave birth to her last child, Zeus, she hid him on Mount Ida and instead gave Cronus a stone swaddled in a blanket, which he swallowed instead. When Zeus came of age, he tricked Cronus into disgorging his siblings, which, being immortal, had survived in his stomach. Together they battled against the Titans in a ten year war called the Titanomachy. In the end, the gods were victorious, and took their place as rulers of the universe.
Theia: The Titaness of sight and brilliant light. She was the wife of Hyperion, the Titan of light, and by him the mother of Helios (the sun god), Selene (the moon goddess), and Eos (the dawn goddess). Theia is also credited as the one who gave precious metals and gems their luster and worth.
Tethys: The Titaness of fresh water, Tethys was the wife of another Titan presiding over water, Oceanus. They were the parents of the Potamoi (the rivers) and the three-thousand Oceanids (ocean nymphs). In some myths, it is said that Tethys acted as a sort of foster mother to Hera, who was entrusted into her care by Rhea while her brothers fought in the Titanomachy.Β
