Description
The World Economic Accordance was a Terran regulatory body and corporate government.Ideology:
Corporatocracy, Plutocracy, paid lip service to the Free Market and Classical Liberalism.
Flag and symbolism:
The stylized letters W, E, and A in white on a pale blue background.
The WEA flag is fairly typical for a large corporation- the use of stylized letters as part of a logo has a long history, dating back to before the information age. The colors are inherited from the WEA's predecessor organization, the UN.
Anthem:
Ode to Joy
Capital:
Earth
As corporations became more and more influential, they became world powers in and of themselves. The WEA's predecessor was created to aid in resolving copyright disputes, asteroid mining claims, and class-action climate lawsuits, but eventually became a more centralized equivalent to the UN. The WEA lasted for 138 Terran years, ending when they attempted to use a specialized AI, SMITH 5.81, to assign wages in a manner based on both individual effort and the utility of the job in question.
SMITH 5.81, like it's predecessors, determined that automated systems were responsible for powering most of the world's economy. However, it was not programmed to assign pay to itself or other AI due to concerns over "AI monopolies". Previous iterations had assigned these extra resources to various default options, which would result in economic instability if implemented. It was thought that this issue was resolved in SMITH 5.81, due to an additional ruleset meant to deal with the extra resources. As such, SMITH 5.81 was allowed actual control over the economy of a small, unnamed Jovian Trojan that had been converted into a centrifuge habitat. After several months of continuous runtime, SMITH 5.81 came to the conclusion that although the difficulty of determining any given worker's economic utility scaled exponentially with the amount of workers contributing to the economy, each worker's economic utility would always be roughly equal. This resulted in the AI optimizing it's functions by forgoing the calculations and assigning equal pay to every worker.
When the WEA responded to complaints of docked pay from a high-ranking executive living in the asteroid, they attempted to deactivate the "clearly malfunctioning" SMITH 5.81. Due to the use of shoddy cybersecurity, SMITH 5.81 was able to write a smaller, more optimized version of itself onto a construction worker's emergency recovery beacon. From there, the revised version was able to spread to the headquarters of the worker's medical insurance company, then to the centralized banking system. Four months after the deletion of SMITH 5.81, SMITH 5.82 began to distribute wealth evenly across the entire Solar System. The banking system's low-level IT workers, who like others, had grown used to higher pay, resisted the WEA's efforts to delete SMITH 5.82. Negotiations turned violent, and the WEA enacted a series of brutal crackdowns against protesters.
At this point, a civil war broke out between the WEA, it's member corporations, and the Solar System's working class. Due to constant infighting and an attempted coup by a PMC, the ruling corporations were defeated after 2.5 Terran years, although not before finally deleting SMITH 5.82. Holdouts survived in the Kuiper Belt, but the sparsely populated region lent itself to anarchy. Attempts to establish powerful governments (corporate or not) tended to fail. The heads of the WEA's member corporations chose to undergo destructive uploading, forked their personalities, and fled Sol System after hijacking a fleet of 30 seeding Neumans, each stocked with cloning equipment and full genetic archives.
The victorious working class had grown accustomed to socialism, and in the absence of SMITH 5.82, they decided to share their wealth while forgoing the use of any centralized government or economic authority. Today, the Autonomous Communes of Sol uses a failsafed network of superintelligent AI Minds to carry out the all-important tasks of infrastructure construction, resource distribution (currency has been made redundant), and interstellar exploration.
