That is absolutely nothing like Fara Phoenix. Nothing at all. It's kinda disturbing.

It's not supposed to look like the Fara from the comics. It's based on Fred's design of Fara when he was working on his early animated series. Hence what I wrote in the description.

I see now. Your artwork, as usual is superb. Even so... I really have to wonder what the hell the original artist was thinking.Β I wouldn't call that "Fara Phoenix". I'd call it a fan-character using a canonical name as a disguise.Β I absolutely never would have guessed that I was looking at Fara: there's no similarity between this and the canonical Fara aside from them both being anthro. Her pose and expression are also both grossly out-of-character.

It's quite jarring.

This is super old, so I wouldn't call it superb, but thanks.

Part of why her appearance was changed is because of copyright. Even if you're not making money off of a fan project, Nintendo doesn't always care. Either way, Fara no longer looks like this in his series.

"Part of why her appearance was changed is because of copyright.Β Even if you're not making money off of a fan project, Nintendo doesn't always care."

That doesn't make any sense at all. If that was the case, just using the name wold be infringement, and the project atΒ mcleodgaming.com/games/ssf2 would not exist.

He did actually have to change some of the names recently because Nintendo shut him down. Either way, this design is hardly the most offensive one out there so it's not that big of deal, especially since it's not being used anymore.

"Even though Adult Swim’s dev team checked out my cartoon on one of their recent live streams, they didn’t really seem tooΒ β€œinto it.” That being said, I’d love to have a full studio/team to work with,"

THAT'S why. He has no right to do anything like that without explicit permission from Nintendo.

That was posted 3 days ago, the DMCA was issued like a month ago, before the episode was finished. There's also a difference between a dev team checking out your project and approaching them for funding or something. He's in no way trying to take credit for Star Fox or making a profit from it. This is strictly a fan project.

If you have issues with this project, you should take it up with him. I just do some extra character and background work for this.

The very nature of that Q & A makes it very clear that these guys aren't aware of how copyright law works. I've never seen Nintendo come down hard on a fan project before, and that's likely because I haven't seen a fan project trying to get support from well established companies without the IP owner's permission before.

If you have problems with this project, or questions about it, you'll need to ask Fred yourself.

I do somewhat concur with those who are... less than pleased with certain of the character re-imagings.
And well, Fara seems to have been hit particularly hard in that regard. Everyone else still had traces of their official selves, albeit in a distorted fashion (though certain choices, like portraying Slippy as a scruffy haired hick mechanic are just... wha?), but Fara? If I hadn't read the name under the cast list, I would never have guessed it was her, thought that it was a redesign of Vixy (Fox's mother) instead or merely assumed it was a new character for the series.

Though, that said, this is a very well made depiction of that design. I'm loving the cleaner and smoother look, as opposed to the scruffy-ness of the series, and I really how her hair has been done, it almost reminds me of certain anime' series.

I think it's kind of hard to say that Fara doesn't have any traces of her former self, especially since she only appeared once and was never seen again. Fox's personality is different in each game, but I guess since it's canon no one really minds that much. Pretty sure the characters aren't meant to be exactly as they are in the comics/games.

That said, thank you xD

ACdraw In reply to myuinhiding [2012-01-30 17:18:58 +0000 UTC]

Well, Fara may have only appeared once, but it was still enough to leave a lasting impression on some people, as noted by some of the responses below mine. And whilst it is true Fox's personality changes a bit in each game, I could still see those changes as being the same person (that said, he was a little closer to his 64-era personality in Assault than he was in Adventures).

But I guess it's kinda like what others have said below... in that I know full well the series' interpretations of the characters aren't meant to be like they are in the games (in some cases, they seem to be exact polar opposites), but that I'm still not so big a fan of certain portrayals.

And you're most welcome.

this is way better than faras fennec fox look, I wish they actually had designed her like this. I would rather fara be with fox over krystal if she looked like this AND IM A HARDCORE KRYSTAL FAN TO.

Wrong species of fox ... everything is the wrong color ...

I'm sorry, but this looks NOTHING like Fara Phoenix. This is a completely different character.

I have honestly only seen one other depiction of Fara that looked so little like "Fara" as this does, and that was a bizarre anime-ish crazy thing that was barely identifiable as a Fox, let alone Fara Specifically.

Though really, I don't like anything about what those people are doing with that "Animated Series" other than that they are putting in the effort to TRY.

Kudos for the effort on their part ... but, YUCK. The personality interpretations of all the characters don't appeal to me at all, the setting and mood of what I've seen is just weird, and all the character designs are some of the ugliest I've ever seen. Again ... Kudos to them for going to extra mile with their project ... but as a StarFox fan, I don't like what I've seen AT ALL.

...

Fara doesn't have hair. She's not supposed to have hair ... and she looks better without it.

And she is supposed to be a FENNEC fox, not a common Red-Fox. That means MUCH bigger ears and a solid colored tail. No white tip.

Sorry ~myuinhiding. I'm not loving this one.

I guess it's just a different sense of humor? I dunno. When I first found out about the series, I wasn't sure how I felt about it, but the characters and the style grew on me. The fact that he isn't taking the "expected road" for this is one of the things I thought was cool.

Yeah, she is supposed to be a Fennec fox, but most of the characters have been changed so much that it doesn't really bother me. It's a reinterpretation so things are going to be different. Lol, I'm scared about what you'll say if I ever get around to Slippy xD

I'll probably just ignore it and not even click on the thumbnail.

I'm just a huge "CLASSIC" Fara fan, so the fanboy in me would not allow me to let this go without a comment.

I really have no problem with your artistic rendering of THEIR interpretation of the character. It's well done and all that, and actually makes her not look hideous. I just don't like THEIR interpretation of her that you based this picture on.

To each their own I guess.

While I can understand your feelings about the character not resembling the fennec, at least it pays to feel good about the fact that it's MEANT to be Fara, as opposed to some other foxy character, like Krystal or a fan-character. I had a friend who used to draw Fara looking like a red fox, with long blonde hair, because while my friend knew about the character being Fox's beloved, she didn't know what she looked like. Eventually, she drew Fara as she classically appears from the comics, but I learned to like her original interpretation, knowing it's still meant to be Fara Phoenix. I once asked Fredryk to draw Fox and Fara, both as how he draws them, and how we normally view them.

If the characters personality is completely different ... appearance is different ... back story is different ... then it is NOT the same character, regardless of what their name is.

Giving them the same name when they are completely different is not an Homage. If anything, it is basically a declaration that they don't like the original character as they were before at all. It's all but saying they HATE the original character if they don't find them interesting until they completely change who they are.

As a fan of the "CHARACTER" that was Fara Phoenix, and not just her name, I'm not a fan of such "re-imaginings".

That said ... My personal opinion on the matter isn't any more important or valid than anyone else's. It's just my Opinion. Nothing More.
