Tumblr PostI was wondering what to draw tonight, and I lucked out when I found some really cool production designs from the Sailor Moon anime floating around on Tumblr.
Apparently the Moonlight Knight had a prototype design that was discarded, but Mamoru can still be seen wearing this outfit in the first opening for Sailor Moon R. The clip where this outfit appears also made its way into the English DiC opening, so I'm a bit surprised I never noticed it before. Try and find the scene!
The colors were minimal in the opening and the outfit wasn't as detailed as the initial production art, so I did some creative guesswork. Overall the outfit looks far more similar to Prince Endymion's outfit with a more washed-out color scheme and less armor. His mask is sort of star or butterfly shaped as well and looks soooo much cooler than Tuxedo Mask's regular one. Overall it was way more interesting and cooler looking than Filler Moonlight Ethnically Confused Knight.
This was fun to work on since I need to practice drawing Mamoru/Endymion for the manga I'm creating. I tried to give this a rough Materials Collection feel with some watercolor brushes and rougher lines.

oh yeah. the whole time when i saw the opening,I thought it was king endymion,but I didn't look close enough

It looks better than Tuxedo Mask's. I look at what he was wearing the Entire rest of the series and sigh at the ludicrous impracticality of it

I always thought that having keep the top hat in the rest of the show made him look really ridiculous in the 90's anime - I was really glad that he never really had his top hat much past the first story arc in the manga.
Past that, I never thought the tuxedo any more impractical than most of the outfits in the series. Naoko always thought about how cool something would look, not necessarily how practical it would be for fighting, which you can really tell when looking at the runway fashion inspiration for many of her characters like the Ayakashi Sisters....

I've also wailed at the thematic break with having sailor suited heroines and the male hero not being in a stylized gakuran

So THAT'S where that costume comes from!Β I noticed that scene in the original American opening ages ago, back when I first started watching SM in the mid-nineties, and it has puzzled me for years why he was shown wearing a costume he never wears in the show!Β I agree it's a little too similar to Endymion's armor, but it looks better than the design they eventually went with.

I'm still surprised I never even noticed it!! I think I always figured it was his Endymion armor but he's wearing a mask and they were using washed out colors or something odd.

As I recall, I noticed the different mask and one day paused the tape to get a better look at the rest of his outfit, because it didn't look right either.Β For a while I hoped it was going to be a new, powered up form for him, but that didn't happen.Β It's a bit sad that in the anime he never really got any new powers or forms, don't you think?

His Endymion form was like the closest thing to a powered up form, but I seem to remember him usually doing less in that form.
Other than that, his attacks were bizarre and sort of cheesy and despite the fact he never actually had any real powers, his appearance always seemed to turn the tide of battle for no particular reason.... it definitely bugged me.
