Description
Let the purgation begin!~The Holy Imperial Inquisition has sent me to burn you, heretic
--
I was actually finished with this on Monday, but I didn't have time to go get it scanned until today.
It's my first ever real attempt at drawing Warhammer 40K fanart and I've tried to incorporate some of the key features that I love about space marines (terminators to be more specific - because they wear the heaviest armour). You'll notice the hood being terminator, but I guess I couldn't help making the armour really fat. I got some of the inspiration from Marneus Calgar's huge pauldrons and power fist. I tried emphasising how fat and bulky space marine bolters are, and made the storm bolter extra wide and blocky.
I can still come up with many things I could have added or changed, but I may leave it to my next piece if I'm doing one.
Make sure to check out my friend *DeVmarine who does a lot of Warhammer 40K artwork.

ROFL the storm bolter was originally meant to be an actual block but then I felt like incorporating the "I" into it. I kind of screwed the crux terminatus because I tried copying the one on the link you sent me, but I found out that the edges are meant to be round...
I'll see about drawing more 40K; Villiami suggests I should do a dreadnought because they're also badass.

LOL Same size head as the terminator, but armour that takes up the whole page.

Lol yea.
I think if you want to do a dreadnought though you should give it a background, otherwise it'll look too idle.

Nah... Fat Emperor ftw. Or one of the primarchs, which one? Leman, Horus or Magnus? I kind of want to do Sanguinius because he's got wings, but I'm not sure if he'd look good in really fat armour...
Anyway, I think I'd do the Emperor first. Give him some bling.

Between Russ, Horus and Magnus I really dont like the looks of any of them, but if i had to choose i chose Horus. Mortarion, Angron, or Corax would look kool though.

I think the contrast in this is great. I don't know if you did it intentionally, but there seems to be less midtones in this compared to your other works, and more pure black and white, which makes a huge impact. You did a great job on this, and in terms of intricacy, there really isn't much for me to pick on anymore.
I guess what you could work on is texture, and to be able to express the different materials in your art. At the moment every surface seems very similar, and while I could probably guess a few of the materials in this by looking at what its is, I can't be sure. The main part of his fist where the 'I' is attached, for example. Is it plastic, or wooden, or iron? The only drawback if you do this is that you may have to switch to an even larger drawing space so that you can show the texture while maintaining the same level of detail, so I imagine it wouldn't be easy.
This is still awesome though. Love the strong sense of 3D I get

I suppose I tried to make it look even shinier by adding such contrast, but there's only so much you can accomplish with a 2B pencil, so I just upped it even more on Gimp.
Haha technically almost all of the exposed parts of the terminator armour is metal, only possibly the having been painted over; even the wings are made of gold. Though I get what you mean about the textures. I kind of intentionally left the "I" unshaded because I was lazy; I also kind of wanted it to seem like it's glowing as well but that kind of failed.
Thanks for the feedback as it seems you're always the most thorough.

I think the glowing effect for the 'I' came out ok, certainly not a fail. It did occur to me that it looked liked it was lit up from the inside, so I guess you accomplished your goal
And you're welcome! Although now that I look back I'm worried that I may type too much sometimes. My screen is wide so it doesn't look like there's a lot of text when I type ;_;

n00brevolution In reply to nitefise [2011-04-25 01:24:49 +0000 UTC]
At least I can say your comments are relevant. I'd rather have constructive criticism than praise.
π: 0 β©: 1
nitefise In reply to n00brevolution [2011-04-25 01:39:35 +0000 UTC]
Praise isn't wrong; everyone needs praise at some point in their lives. It's just when it's over-done that it becomes tedious.
I don't know whether it's because of artistic ability, but almost all of my watchers' comments are nothing but praise and while there's nothing wrong with that, it gets boring for me to type out "thanks " 20 times every time I post a new deviation.
But I guess giving constructive criticism isn't as easy as it seems. I can openly do that with your work, one: because I know you personally, two: because I know you can handle criticism positively, and three: because we do art in similar mediums at (somewhat) similar levels.
I usually wouldn't put as much time commenting on the work of a deviant I know as I do to yours, partly because I don't know how they'll take it, and partly because sometimes there's too much for me to say, unfortunately. :/
I'm only willing to give constructive criticism if I know the persion receiving it is going to take it seriously. Otherwise I'm just wasting my time.

I totally know what you mean. I usually commit myself to replying to every comment that I get, but yeah, it gets tedious, even if you try and vary "Thanks!", "Thank you!" and "Glad you like it!" as much as I can...
When I think about it, I agree with what you say about constructive criticism, and I personally hardly ever give it to anyone other than friends.

nitefise In reply to n00brevolution [2011-04-25 05:43:40 +0000 UTC]
Yes! Exactly! The varying gets really annoying, yet I still try to do it as much as possible. Imagine going to someone's page and seeing that all their replies are exactly the same :/

It's rather sad, but it really puts me off commenting on really good work when there are pages and pages of budget comments. Sometimes I really want to say something, but I know the artist probably wouldn't bother looking through any of it... For those artists that have tones of views, they probably get so many comments of pretty much the same thing, so simply press the *select all* and the *remove*. >.<

nitefise In reply to n00brevolution [2011-04-25 21:45:54 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, one of the many flaws of life
One solution would be to somehow separate the constructive comments from the plain old 'looks great' kind of thing. Perhaps a label you select when you submit a comment, so that it notifies the artist/author. But then people could abuse this knowing that if they choose the non-critique label their comment will be ignored.
It's unlikely such an idea would be taken seriously with dA, since they already have the critique system for subscription members. Allowing separate critique options for normal members would mean less money for dA, in a strict economical sense. :/

You know what might work, (I kind of got the idea from facebook as well) you could simply have a the choice between liking or disliking something without having to comment, but you could still comment if you wish. Also, if you want to get even more in depth, I suppose you could select from one of those 7 categories on the side of the comment box. I suppose this way, many people who normally can't be stuffed saying much can just click they like the drawing.

It's an effective system in itself, but I reckon it'll make deviantART too similar to facebook. dA is an especially unique social networking site, if you can call it a social networking site at all. I certainly wouldn't want to see dA copy something from facebook, which in my opinion is somewhat inferior in many respects.

You can't really compare DA and facebook because their individual goals are rather different; DA is mainly to express and allow feedback/discussion on art and literature, whereas facebook is to connect people together and provide a host of social interaction. I would never expect much appreciation for the work that I upload on facebook, but facebook is by far, a way better means of communicating than DA (the chat system on DA is pathetic and not easily accessible). All I'm trying to say is that you kind of need an appreciation for both. Anyway back to the topic, if you don't like the idea of facebook, I guess the like/dislike idea is actually the same as that of youtube. People can easily click either they like the work or not without needing to comment.

Lol the moment I pressed send on my last comment I knew that I was going to get a lecture like this from you
Anyhow, it really doesn't make a difference what ideas we discuss here. dA admins aren't gonna go about reading discussions like this. In the meantime, there's always the button, but I must admit that I don't use that often
