This is my first genuine attempt to draw my Barrows OC using colour pencil, and it's been occupying me all these past three weeks. I'm quite pleased overall since I hardly ever use colour pencil, but there are definitely techniques that I'm yet to master.It's done using colour pencils from a Faber Castel 48 Pack on A3 paper. I'm not sure exactly how long it's taken, but I estimate more than 30 hours, due to the fact that I overlap heaps and all the main colours you see are comprised of at least three separate colours each. Again, I had to tweak the brightness and contrast on Gimp because the wings didn't quite come out on the scan.
You can see that the character holds distinct resemblance to my other OCs and particularly the axe to that of [link] I made the mask simpler because I thought it may stand out more.

About how long do these pieces take you on average? They look like they take some hard core motivation to finish.

This one took me more than 24 hours and I did it through a duration of three weeks. I suppose what motivates me is that it was something that I personally wanted to draw for myself. To be honest I probably couldn't stand putting that much time into a commission unless it was something that I also wanted to draw.

You're quite right in thinking that a simpler, less ornamented mask would stand out among all the details here. My eyes went right to it... and then started drinking in the rest. You have a fantastic eye for details, I can see that -- every nick and scratch in the armor and weapon and everything speaks of a battle survived and a victory gained... yet that mask seems pristine, untouched. (well, the one on the face, anyway...) Kind of suggests that there's a part of this character that hasn't been ravaged by carnage and its less-than-tender mercies.
The piece as a whole has elements of brutality and grace. There's an interesting contrast between harsh metal and looser, more flowing fabrics... and I think my favourite contrast is on the head, where there's that skull sitting atop light and floofy feathers.

The masked feather headdress is pretty much the signature part of all my OCs now. I too thought the simpler mask would be more effective.
Heh, I don't know about the brutality since I've been drawing less skulls now and have resorted to a slightly more ornate looking tough.
