Description My second competent attempt at colour pencils. The whole process took quite a long time; I'd estimate at least 20 hours, but not nearly as long as the previous Barrows Rebirth [link]

Overall I technically used around 15 different colours in this, but by far the most used were indigo, brown, gold/tan, and red/maroon. I used the indigo so much in fact that it was once a full 20cm and now it's less than 5, the gold and brown are pretty worn too.

I guess anyone who has strolled through my gallery can see that this is the elaborated version of Mother Barrows in colour. And, you may have noticed that this Barrows, does not in fact have the classic feather wings. I suppose it's because I thought it may look a bit messy if I added them in and I guess you can count her as some sort of psychic necromancer who should naturally be able to fly.

I think I've improved in my colouring in here a lot more than in the first coloured Barrows, but in all honestly, I still prefer brutes with fat ass armour and wargear over the feminine touch.

For now though, I shall be taking a break from Barrows, but I'll come back to it in a month or so with my first full colour Barrows on canvas.

This is amazing work! All those details, and dress is fantastic, nails sharp, it hard to make sharp lines with pencil, but that just amazing work, all colours and skull! I really like this work!

Thank you very much. Though I actually think it's easier to make sharp lines with pencil, so long as you have a sharp pencil. It's at least easier than painting or charcoal.

*sigh* sorry it took me so long to comment on this, i just couldnt think of anything sufficient for far too long, and i thought id prefer to give you a thought out comment instead of a one liner.

Well, in any case, once again we see you are the master of the pencil, undisputed. The stylisation of the figure is perfect, and yet hints just enough proper anatomy to capture the imagination. The clothes, my friend, stun me. You are able to make them practically emanate grandeur, and not just in their movement, but in their design, detail and simply portrayal. It is something i whole-heartedly commend!

I have to say though, the part i find most skillfully done, and most to my liking about the piece, are the skulls on her waist, the detail and mood they bring forth is almost tangable. But that is not to say that every other part of the drawing is not equally as beautiful, it is just the part i like most.

I would however, offer one small tip. I dont know if youve noticed this yet, i suspect you have, but despite the elegance of her left hand, thats raised near her face, the forearm comes off a bit to short. Thats because there seems to be no line that hints the shape of the forearm going inside the biceps, as per pov of perspective.. or atleast its put too much on the exact border where the flesh meets on paper, disregarding the perspective. But honestly, its a very minor detail, and frankly the only fault i can find in the piece.

Once again my friend, immaculate, simply immaculate!

You always give the most thorough portrayals of well appreciated feedback - this I am ever thankful for your keen enthusiasm of my work.

As you pointed out, I did in fact realise my mistake in that forearm but by then it was already too late as I couldn't alter any part of it to correct this.

Youre only too welcome, my friend, you thoughroughly deserve it!

Ah, well i figured something like that was the case, but no matter, the mistake is minor : )

Amazing daemon horns! I love how the horns meld with the skull. the repetition and shine of the horn give weight volume and a clear and seamlessly real presence to them.

n00brevolution In reply to BaconRaider [2011-03-24 03:21:17 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your feedback. In my lastest works, I've been paying more and more attention to studying the shape of the human skull and I suppose I kind of made up the shape of the horns.

BaconRaider In reply to n00brevolution [2011-03-24 03:30:02 +0000 UTC]

I think you morphology is spot on, but with artistic license and implied function you are so in the green. the side horn on a non ungulate skull is tough to pull off, but you did great. three bone fuse there in humans and its conceivably that concessions could be made in development to incorporate a horn. plus its look really cool.

Btw, do you ever adjust levels after scanning your pictures? It'll make the background whiter and the colours stand out more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

n00brevolution In reply to nitefise [2011-03-23 03:25:23 +0000 UTC]

I pretty much always have to adjust the brightness and contrast of scans and photos that I submit. I did in fact tweak this piece too, and the first time when I upped the contrast too much to reveal a completely white background, I thought it looked a bit too bright.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nitefise In reply to n00brevolution [2011-03-23 03:33:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh I see. I always use auto-levels in Photoshop; I don't know if there's anything like that in GIMP or whatever, but I only adjust brightness and contrast manually if I have to. Most of the time the auto does a fine job, and doesn't over-do it.

n00brevolution In reply to nitefise [2011-03-23 03:51:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, Zheng gave me CS5 so I should be able to do that auto-levels. Maybe I'll try with my next piece.
