Poor Wheatley, only realizing what he was doing to his buddy when it was too late. And poor Chell, driving her only true friend insane with power, and then pulling him into the void of space.
Those two have rough lives.

I still feel this way, and I've played through the game four times. Why did Valve have to create such a loveable character and then to THAT to us? -bawls-

But after playing the first Portal, I had a feeling that something bad was gonna happen to Wheatley (like the way they get you attached to the companion cube). Only, I thought you would be forced to throw him into the incinerator. o.o

Technically something like that /did/ happen, he got crushed by GLaDOS. The difference being that he survived... only to be put into an even more heart-wrenching scenario. D,:

I know, right?! When I got to this part I was like THIS GAME HAD BETTER HAVE A HAPPY ENDING OR ELSE! D=< And then it didn't! I couldn't believe they would actually do that... but it was very well done.

I actually felt creeped out when he turned on us. I'm serious, I felt honestly freaked out and not wanting to believe he had turned on us; that's a sign of a good character right there. The ending made me cry like a litter girl, even thinking about it made my eyes water.
Seriously, the people at Valve are masters of making good characters.

I know! I truly didn't see it coming. I was shocked and actually almost hurt, even for it being a game. I've seen the ending happen 3 times now, and cried each time. But again, very well done, and a very good character. It takes good writing to evoke deep emotion like that. But I seriously loved him. So much. I'm currently working on a fanfiction about Wheatley and Chell's final thoughts.

I haven't felt such an emotional attachment to a character since I was a pre-teen, and he's just a little sphere! I was actually, truly upset when he made it clear he wanted to kill us, that takes some seriously good character development.

I would recommend the Shannara books. Amazing books; very well structured, amazingly written, characters you get attached to, emotional story lines, and "happy" endings where not *quite* everything is completely happy. It's quite a long series, but you don't need to read all of them. The first book is the Sword of Shannara, and it and the next two books are each their own story. Then the stories come in sets of 3 or 4 books; several "miniseries". So you can read some of them or you can read all of them.
...and by emotional story lines, I DON'T mean love and romance. There are VERY FEW love stories in these books, and when there are, they are very well done. I hate romance, but one in particular in this series actually made me cry.
