Oil on Canvas: 48 x 60.Removing the Thorn came to me in a dream in 2008 when I began to journal about the path of life. In the dream, a white haired man came to my door. Wanting to buy my house on the spot, he handed me a handful of cash. As I invited him inside I explained to him that I was only renting. I offered to show him a map of the area but he didnβt seem too interested. I looked for one anyway while he sat at my dining room table. When I returned with the map, this painting is what I saw sitting in front of him as though he had just painted it. I was drawn in by the unconventional Jesus whose Lordship is not the clipping of claws as we might fear, but rather the digging out of our deepest hindrances so that the lion within us can be liberated. The symbolism of the peacock that emerges from the lionβs chest represents the beauty that comes after we surrender our brokenness to the healer rather than trying to conceal our limp.

The picture itself, even without the description, is beautiful in a way that draws the eye to it even when you're not looking for it. But after reading your description, I could see a deeper meaning within scene. You're right, He doesn't 'clip our claws' to render us harmless, but rather removes the 'thorns' in our lives so that we will be able to fight against evil all the better. I can't actually see the peacock coming out of the lion's chest (He's in the way), but it really does make sense, since so often it's our pride that is a 'thorn' in our life and keeps us from truly serving Him.
There's something else that your picture reminds me of. In Matthew 9, Jesus talks about how sick people need a doctor, while healthy people do not, and how he's come for the sinners who will admit their sin, rather than for the people who already thought themselves good enough. The way the man is pulling the thorn from the lion's paw reminds me of a doctor who heals those who need it.

The lion's face strikes me the most, with such an emotional expressions of not being able to move another step; hopefully the thorn removal will help
The face of the man has a very studious look to him, intent on his work, but the expression holds the feeling also, that all will be well. I like the reflection in the water also
